File Format Question
#275674 - 02/10/12 06:40 PM

For some time now, a great source of aggravation for me is file formats. If I create a vectored file in CorelDraw and export it as .PNG, MAME cannot read it. I must first open the exported file and resave it using MS Photo Editor; the problem is, MS Photo Editor has a ridiculous file size limit, such that I cannot export anything to a width of 4000 pixels (sometimes I'm limited to half of that). No other software package I have seems to want to export graphics in a format that MAME can read.

My question is, is there something in the export parameters that I'm missing? Or what method do you guys use on bezels? Is this something that Adobe Illustrator automatically "does"?

Weird... haven't notced that yet, but thatksprobably becauseI take everything into photoshop first for a little tweaking.

I'll check when I get home and see if I can figure it out.

Well...

It works fine over here.

What kind of errors are you getting?

Let's say I make a marquee in Corel, then export it to .PNG using the following params:

If I drop said .PNG directly into a MAME artwork file, it will display as:

But if I re-save it with MS Photo Editor, it works fine.

?????

Hmmm...

Well, I have gotten that kind of thing before in the past when a file saved weird. (You also get it if you misspell the name of the file in the "element" tag.)

Try running a newly saved image through OptiPNG, and see if that works: http://optipng.sourceforge.net/

Supposedly, PNGOUT (free)...
http://advsys.net/ken/utils.htm

...or PNGOUTWin (PAID)...
http://www.ardfry.com/pngoutwin/

...beats OptiPNG. There's also a paid plugin for Photoshop.

Maybe MAME requires 32-bit color (RGBA)?

You mean the droplist that says "pixels"? That's just where you select the unit of measurement (pixels vs. inches, etc.).

I tried that, and the edges come out all pixellated.
