CRT question new
#285789 - 05/10/12 01:40 AM

I am building a Mame arcade machine and I have a Nvidia 520GT

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130632

I am using a 27" sony crt TV with component inputs. I need to convert any of the outputs (VGA, DVI or HDMI) to component. Any suggestions on the best converter

Currently looking at this but not sure if this is what I need

http://www.amazon.com/HDMI-RCA-component-AV-Converter/dp/B002WBOQPU

PC Setup
Intel i3
Geforce 520gt
4gb DDR3 ram
64 GB SSD
Win 7 64 Bit

A cheaper and a better solution to just use a VGA to Component cable

http://www.amazon.com/VGA-RCA-Component-RGB-Cable/dp/B000FM3EQ0/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1336609866&sr=1-1

Better = less power consumption, one less device to fiddle with.

From what the reviews say I will still need a converter for this cable. I was wondering if you are positive this will work.

http://www.amazon.com/VGA-RCA-Component-...9866&sr=1-1

I'm kinda new to the arcade building world.

For ease this is the TV I am using

Sony Trinitron Color TV
Model no. KV-27FS12
120V
60Hz
with composite, s video and component inputs

That will not work at all, stay away. VGA does not become Component Video by putting some plugs at the ends of a cable, it takes a little more work than that.

Provided that it does what it says it does, the HDMI to component converter in the OPs first post should work fine for this purpose.

I read some of the reviews on the site and checked my tv, it does not have RGB next to the inputs it says ypbpr so I am assuming this would work better?

No, like the other cable, it will not work. A cable with the right plugs at each end is not enough, DVI is a digital signal, component is analog, there needs to be some sort of conversion taking place.

Just buy that box you linked to in your first post, it'll be fine.

That's not a converter, it just outputs the analog RGB signals to RCA jacks. Component TV needs YUV on the 3 jacks so that cable won't work for what the OP needs.

Actually, there might be a way to do it, via Powerstrip....but considering that unit is only thirty bucks, try it out.

Your TV has DVI, wherein you could possibly use an HDMI to DVI cable. That's an interesting interface, how the BNC also handles component.

It will not work, period. Powerstrip cannot convert a digital signal (HDMI/DVI) to an analog signal, and it cannot convert VGA output to Component, even if it's running at 15KHz. Active circuitry is required.

However since it also has an HDMI input that would be a waste of cable.

vga to componet is gonna look like hammered asshole. scart to svideo wud look decent..your best bet is a real monitor or tv with svideo or the cheapest route an older cpu monitor.

No it's not and no it wouldn't.

S-video is not terrible but it's inferior to component video. You must be thinking of composite video. I can't imagine why someone would want s-video when they can have component.

His video card has no analog TV-out, so the only way he can do what he wants is VGA/DVI/HDMI -> component via some kind of external converter.

This cannot be done with a passive cable (like those retarded cables on Amazon), there must be an active circuit between the video card and the television that converts the signal from the video card to component video.

VGA to SCART on the other hand is pretty straight forward and can be done with a cable and no additional electronics - as long as your video card can be brought down to 15Khz through software. I've done it myself using Powerstrip and an old Radeon 7000 PCI card (photo). When you do it that way there's no conversion taking place, it's 1:1. A television with SCART input is basically an arcade monitor with a TV tuner.

That's true, but in my case my video card doesn't have HDMI out, and all my inputs were full. I've sense installed a Key Digital matrix switch, so that everything can share the same video display without having to unplug/replug stuff in.

Now that he's posted his TV model and inputs, things are clearer now.

Ok so the converter arrived today, and it does not work. I get an extremely choppy image I cannot make out anything once it loads. I dropped the refresh rate of the video card to 60hz will try dropping further to see if that helps. Is there a better wire I should use, using component but I think its RGB not Ypbpr I don't think there is a separate wire for each. I don't know what else to try any suggestions would be great.

///////////EDIT///////////////

Dropped to 56Hz and colors to 16 bit same image. I just don't know what to do at this point except possibly trying to find a crt computer monitor that is the same size 25"-27". I think the issue maybe just converting from the PC to the TV going to get a pc-tv converter and see if that works

Actually, I think what he needs is a different video card that has tv-out.

There were cards on the market (mostly ATI cards) that had component adapters/dongles like this...

I don't have time to sort the ins and outs of what you bought to the TV model, but I can say you get the similar results on the screen when sending the wrong resolution to an arcade monitor (High->Low...VGA->CGA)

Also, instead of focusing on the refresh rate and color depth, try lowing the screen resolution from whatever you have it at to 800x600 or 1024x768. most TVs should be able to handle those resolutions.

I am going to try a PC to TV converter (VGA to S-video), don't know why I didn't try this first, it should convert the signal but this is all a guessing game at this point

@B2K24

I already had the card, was hoping to just use that but I may need to switch if I can't get that to work.

@italie

I had the resolution set too 800x600. Even bumped up to 1024 but still nothing I think it may be just to conversion from pc to tv

I was under the impression that is what you had bought. What exactly are you using now? You might be able to get this working with soft15Khz

You might want to try going down to 640x480 instead.
