64bit or 32bit - does it really matter??
#310404 - 06/17/13 02:58 AM

Hi Guys. I'm in the final stages of my mame cab build. Checking out the software options. I installed TinyXp 32bit which seems to run fine (although having a few issues with the .net framework - wanted to install emumovies download service app.) Later I took a closer look at the PC hardware and I realised I have a dualcore 2.4ghz AMD 64bit processor.

I found this thread which (I think pretty much answers the questions?? but wanted to double check as I want to install the OS once - drivers etc then take an image).

http://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/sho...part=1&vc=1

My questions are:

1. Given that I have a 64 bit processor should I use a 64 bit OS & mame build? What sort of performance gain should I expect?
2. Given that I have plenty of HD space (250gb). I currently only have 1gb of ram but not a problem to install more should I even bother with a Tiny/Mini version etc? Which OS generally gives the best performance? XP or Win7- I guess are the two front runners?

Additional Info:

Looking at using Hyperspin as FE.
I have ArcadeVGA 3000 and using a standard res CRT modified TV (RGB)

Thanks! Matt

64 bit. Unless you need 32 bit drivers for something. Check first or do without.
Win 7(or 8, it was cheaper than 7) Clean install, don't upgrade.
Buy more RAM.

All I got for ya.

Pessimist: Oh, this can't get any worse!
Optimist: Yes, it can!

Yes. The gain is between 5 and 20% in MAME, which can be significant on heavier-weight games (e.g. newer Donkey Kong with the proper analog sound effects simulated, or 3D games). Some future optimizations the devs have in mind may be 64-bit only or most effective on 64-bit as well.

Win 7 x64 runs MAME extremely well, being it was made by Aaron Giles ;-)
