Dig it on the big screen.

Just sharing a cheap little $35 enhancement that makes for a big splash at the next party!
Chromecast in the MAME cabinet.
My son came up with this idea, and it is brilliant!
On the cab's pc, set google chrome with chrome-cast to cast the entire screen.
Voila Walla! The whole party can now watch the action on the big T.V., or in our case, on the home theater screen in life size action.
(Sure cables could do the same job, if you run them all over the place. We're talking super-convenience here, folks. Odds are your cab is maybe not even in the same room as the big screen and party. Odds, are. We're talking odds here, man.)
Suddenly everyone is queuing up to get a turn on the cab, even all those guests who usually are like, "Oh yeah, neat. No, I'll just watch. Actually, I need to get a refill, and I'll be right back [but never comes back]."
Now they're all like, "Oh yeah. I'm next mother fuckers, God damn it, asshole, I'm next!"
Ok, Mom, ok. You're next. Holy shit.
And all of a sudden high scores are a party priority, too. With the whole room able to see the actions, you hear the crowd reacting to the action like "Oh ho ho ho oh" and "NOooooo!" and "Cheese it. It's the cops!" No so much on the last one, but you get the idea.
Dig it! Dig it to hell, you bastards! Arcade Party Part two this weekend.
Try it, and report back to me. I want that report collated and indexed, bound in a leatherette clear-front report cover with dark blue trim by Monday.

That's a grea idea. If your cab has wireless, which a lot of the older ones probably don't.

Nice! What sort of latency are you seeing?

yeah, good question, i've seen somebody do this before and it adaded a good 3-4 frames of lag, which actually rendered most games 'not fun'
that said, maybe modern gamers are more accepting of horrible lag, Sonic Generations seems to have some horrible lag, yet gets widely praised as the best recent Sonic game..

There may be some latency and maybe mild ghosting, but it doesn't affect the Player, who is looking at the cab. The people are watching the action on the screen, and for observers it is more than good enough. Nobody has noticed it (or at least said anything about it) but me.
Things would be different if the player was trying to play looking at the projected screen.

You had it right the first time, "walla" is a non-native-speaker-ism

This shouldn't add any lag at all to MAME as long as the Chromecast is just mirroring your main display. Obviously, the remote display will be lagged, but that doesn't matter to the player who's on the local monitor.

Figured it wouldnt affect the main screen just the mirrored one. For an observer situation it would be perfect. I have a tiny lag in my laptop to LG setup. For a real twitchy sort of game it sucks (just enough to mess me up). But for something like an old point and click sort of game its fine.
I and my wife trade off who gets the TV and they play games while the other watches.

I prefer game lag to display lag though. Trying to play Megaman games on an LCD is horrible for that reason alone, especially if you're used to the original versions on a "traditional" CRT.
I can put up with games slowing down due to being underpowered, as the whole thing slows down, not just the inputs, but taking damage or dying in a game because you pressed a button to react to the screen which was a quarter of a second or so behind the gameplay is just plain annoying. I used to take it out on the emulator(s) as input lag until I found that it did the same thing even with the NES hooked straight up to the LCD.

I meant a lot of older cabs are kept offline, as people are concerned about their security. I got one of those antennas for my Excalubur cab (for a tenth the price, on ebay), but as it's running XP, and I don't use it to surf, I recently stopped using it.

It's actually a meta-joke, dating back to the time several of us made fun of him for writing "Walla" when he meant "Voila"
