RIP Walter Becker...
#369747 - 09/17/17 04:55 PM

I did not know he passed away September 3rd.

I did not hear anything about it on the radio. Should have been talked about for a day with a lot of Steely Dan music being played considering how popular Steely Dan was in the 70's and 80's.

I just found a copy of FM on 7" a few days ago.
No static at all!

Back in 1987, I bought my first CD player. I think the first CD I played was A Decade of Steely Dan. First track "FM". Man did that sound good, and still does.

LOL.

This has nothing to do with Becker (RIP) or Steely Dan, whose music I've always liked though I've never purchased an album of theirs; back in 1986, it may even have been early '87, I bought my first... cassette player. At home we'd had record and 8-track players until then, and the first cassette--indeed the first album of any sort--I'd purchased myself was Hot Space by Queen.

I don't know when I'll be able to play Steely Dan that I actually own.

Steely Dan is one of the top three groups I listen to, so this comes as sad news. I've spent over 20 years trying to write songs of that kind and record them, only to find that even if I come close, nobody can play them.

For all the bashing they took for not being a performance group, they demonstrated what you can achieve when the recorded sound is the prime consideration.

Undeserved, because even if they did stop touring for a while, this is sick:

Did you know that their recording engineer Roger Nichols used to be a nuclear engineer? I guess they wanted someone who was used to handling volatile material.

Nice cover of the song Haitian Divorce from my favorite Dan album, The Royal Scam.
