HELP NEEDED ... lost sound on mame arcade cocktail table
#377318 - 06/30/18 04:06 AM

Hi everyone
I new to this forum
So hope I've posted this in the correct section
But been playing around with mame since the year 2000 ish
And love arcade gaming ..
I recently purchased a mame cocktail table
That wasn't working for £200
I knew there could be much wrong with it
As it only consists of a pc, hdd , crt monitor and a iPac board
The pc mobile is screwed to the base and looks
like it's from around 1999 ish +\-
I first put the hdd in my old pc and mame booted straight up
To cut a long story short I just reset the bios by moving the jumper to
Bios reset , and put on a new 3v bios battery and viola working fine
I have issues inserting credits , I have to connect a keyboard and do it via that way and reprogram it
When I turn off the pc . It doesn't remember what button I've allocated to ..
I don't know if this is related to it but was pressing loads of keys on keyboards then I lost sound .. the sound is at 0db which is the loudest
If I turn down it goes to minus db ..
The hdd is the pc looks like it's only 4gb ide drive
Sound card is a sound blaster ..
It was working fine for about a month or so
But now no sound so looks like it's needs re-installing
There is no windows OS on the hdd ..
it looks like it boots straight to dos as it boots with 5 seconds
I do get an error message while booting up about the sound card
I'm not at home so can't look at the min , but will post it once I'm back home
Can somebody please help me in advice on re-installing the sound card within dos ...
I will also post the version of mame once I put the hdd back on my other pc
As a slave drive ...
any help will be appreciated
Cheers Scott

A couple questions to narrow your problem down.

1. Does the PC otherwise make sounds? Try to run a .wav or somesuch and see.

2. Are you launching MAME directly or through a front end? Try launching MAME with a command line prompt and see if that title makes sounds. If it does, check your front end settings.

3. Lastly, and I hate to ask these questions... but are your speakers working (turned on, generating sound from other sources, etc). Try a headset to listen for sounds maybe.

4. Have you looked at your PC's volume controls to be sure you haven't somehow muted your PC? Or alt-tab out of MAME while running, and go to your PC sound mixer and make sure you haven't muted MAME there.

5. Is your PC plugged in. I kid, I kid. But is it?

hi many thanks for your response
im not great with pcs so have to keep asking a mate lol
1. no the pc isnt making any sounds
(by the look of it there is no windows installed)
the mame just boots up within about 5 seconds of turning it on which is why i assume its just running dos
2.i not sure it has a front end
(once it boots to mame i just get a black screen, with the installed games listed)which is normal on my coctail table
3. yes the speakers are working as its working via the internal sound card (also has an amplifirer with volume dial thats works too, its just intenal sound card sounds mashed up .. possibly not correct bit
the external sound card sounded really good too
i did try a pair of headphones and still nothing
4. dont know how to find pc volume as its only running dos as far as i am aware.... ( in the mame menus the volume bar is up on max , which is zero decabels if i select minus in goes to minus decabels... pretty sure this is right as my main av 5.1 amp is the same
5. yes pc is working as the mame menu comes up after booting up

i am getting an error message on boot up about sound blaster....
dont know how to post a video on here or photo to show it
the message says
c:\>echo off
Error: DIGN8002 the blaster enviroment settings are invalid

creative plug and play configuration utility version 1.09

original screen before lost sound said

C:\>echo off
audio card is configured at A220 I5 D1 A5
(video on my phone not 100% clear but that looks like where its configured)last 2 digits are either A5 or H5

does any of the above make any sense to you pal,
also i would i stop it booting into mame so i could get command promt up
is there an way i could send you a video of it booting up
firstly working fine which i have on my phone and how it boots up now
hope you can help pal
cheers

PS
IVE ADDED ONE PIC OF SOUND CARD WORKING BUT WONT LET ME ADD ANOTHER,

Since your pc isn’t making any sounds at all, espececially with the soundcard error you mention, your problem is not likely a MAME setting, but a PC one. There are other people here way smarter than me on that.

did you see the pics i posted
with the error messages
my mate seems to think we need to get into command promp before mame kicks in but we dont know how to do that
looking at the error messages it seems it lost the sound card configuration so needs reconfiguring within dos

After a bit of googling
Looks like it's windows 98
I help down cntl key while booting up and I get
Start up options
Looks like I need to use safe mode with command promp
I then get the c:/ promp
Any of you guys or girls know what to do from here
At least I've got a little further 👍

This isn't a MAME problem. This is a DOS + sound card problem.

When it says "the blaster enviroment settings are invalid", and it used to work, and you didn't change them, then there has to be a problem with the hardware itself.

You're probably wasting your time trying to get to a DOS prompt because I don't think it's a DOS problem.

Some likely possibilities:

1) Resetting the motherboard BIOS has re-enabled some device that is now conflicting with the sound card IRQ or address space. This was VERY common problem back in the old days.
2) The motherboard is going bad. Failed and bulging capacitors was a VERY common problem.
3) The sound card is not seated in the slot correctly
4) The sound card has failed

I think the most likely culprit is #1

> audio card is configured at A220 I5 D1 H5

This means that your card is trying to use:

Address base: 220
IRQ: 5
DMA channel: 1
16-bit DMA channel: 5

The conflict is likely IRQ5 if that's what the problem really is. Try going into your PC's BIOS and looking around to see if anything is using IRQ5.

This is not the kind of problem that you're going to be able to easily diagnose over the Internet. Even more so that the hardware and OS you're dealing with is over 20 years old.

Your best bet is to find someone in your area who is close to 50 years old who has lived through the dark days of manually configuring IRQs in DOS PCs and enlist their help.

Another option would be to scrap that ancient PC and replace it with modern hardware. You could probably pick up a really nice micro-ATX or mini-ITX motherboard with a current CPU and put together a whole PC for a few hundred bucks.
