Left hand button delay or dysfunction in some games.

Hello all
I seem to have a problem moving left in some games in MAME64. In very simple terms, moving left with the joystick is delayed or does not work. It is most noticeable in Galaxian and Galaga. The spaceship moves right as one would expect but attempting to move left often fails. The ship will fire but will not move left. Strangely enough, the ship will move left if you press right then left.
Consequently, games tend to amount to cautiously moving right and then moving left when able to do so. Generally speaking, the player is stuck or railroaded to the right as the game progresses. I don't recall this being a problem with older versions of MAME32. Has anyone solved such a problem? I have tried a number of keyboards and all have the same problem.

Welcome to MAMEWorld.
Your headline says "some games". It would help to know in which games it happens and which games it doesn't happen.

Here you say joystick
