You know how I just said MAME hasn't killed anyone yet? MAMEdev would prefer to keep it that way, thanks.

yep, but there's a BIG difference between something being dumped and it being available (publicly)in MAME..

All you bad boy MAME Dev's with your private MAME builds with banned ROM'z, not available to us mere plebs...

If it were dumped, I'm not sure which mamedev would be crazy enough to attempt to emulate it. Said dev would likely be the first victim...

Speaking of, there are a few devs I haven't heard from in awhile...

Let me speak clearly: there is no proof that Polybius actually exists. On the off chance that it does, there are no dumps. There are no private builds or secret ROMs or any of that bullshit. We barely have time to deal with the public MAME mainline, I'm sure as hell not going to blow even more time on secret garbage.

For secret garbage, we let the Illunimati take care of it. They hoard such items away within the vast amount of artifacts located in Cibola.

I wrote Ed Rotberg about this "game" a couple of years ago, since he's listed on Wikipedia as the programmer, and never heard back from him. Usually he'll get back to me within a few days when I drop him an email. Take that any way you want...

And let me put on my "cynic" hat too.

There's been a few attempted USENET arcade/MAME "frauds" over the years, with people submitting hacked ROM sets and posting purposefully inaccurate information - for kicks, for April Fool's, just to be a prankster. One of the first of these was Christian Oliver =CYBERYOGI= Windler, who sent in information regarding a "GDR"/East German "Phoenix" set. These ROMs turned out to be hacked as an April Fool's joke.

Notice that "Sinneslöschen" is a German word... odd, so is Mr. Yogi... coincidence?
He also liked information on known fictitious games, like "Bishop of Battle" (see USENET)

Earliest mentions of Polybius:
USENET: Feb 28, 2000: http://groups.google.com/group/rec.games...d95e3338add636a
First Web mention: http://web.archive.org/web/20000303224844/http://www.clickto.com/coinop/GamePage/Polybius.html
February 6, 2000 was the last submitted page modification at time of archival.
A year later, Al Kossow blames CyberYogi: http://groups.google.com/group/rec.games...99bc7e3e30ff0be
Who was also guilty of his April Fool's joke that year: http://groups.google.com/group/rec.games...e0cf1cc3aa72cc8
Smacks of the "long con", if you ask me. February is getting close to April...

Still, it's a fun urban legend to encourage. USENET was a wild place back then, which is why there's a few "confirmations"... I do love what the "scene" has done with this story...

The way the game is described reminds me of that scene from Maximum Overdrive where the arcade game hypnotizes the guy and then shocks him.

If you guys really want me to destroy this myth/urban legend, I really can take it apart systematically.

But I'll leave you with this.

"Sinneslöschen" / "Sinnesloeschen" is the name of the company that supposedly created the game.
We have heard definitions of this word as "sense delete", "sense deletion", "sensory erasure".

... Could it also be "senseless"?

In German, Google Translate says "sinnlos", with a reverse translation as "meaningless" as well.
What is "CYBERYOGI", again - other than an Internet prankster and "netizen"?
Supposedly, founder of "Logologie" - "the first cyber-age religion, Its main subjects include the entire abandonation of brutality and of senseless brain destruction."

Senseless.

http://weltenschule.de/Logologie/e_index.html
Let's look at that in German: http://weltenschule.de/Logologie/index.html

"Sinnlosen".

I wonder if he ever expected it'd take on a life of its own...
Great thing about a "made up word" like "Sinneslöschen", makes it easy to Google and track for laughs...

Nice. I wonder why the hoaxster named Rotberg. Given that it's supposed to be like Tempest you'd think Dave Theurer would've been a more plausible name-drop. (Trivia: Theurer was later responsible for pretty much the entire existence of SNES/Genesis and 256-color PC VGA games thanks to DeBabelizer).

Gut feeling is that back then Rotberg was getting name-dropped quite a bit (sometimes by me). I think 1998-99ish was when he sold off his old protos to people in the community (if you remember that). Also, the games he worked on were falling before MAMEDEV around that time too

Heh... he probably got sick of people asking about it and just ignored my email. I am glad he commented about it, though...
