PSX Driver....Has there been some major speedup or is it my imagination?

Just been trying some of the Playstation hardware based games, and these seem a lot smoother on my Phenom II (@3.8Ghz) than the last time i did a playthrough on the same CPU...which wasn't that long ago.
Certain games like Ehrgeiz which always used to hover around the 40-50fps (non interlaced) now seems a very stable 60fps, i only noticed one drop to 55fps or so when a special Fx move was used.
Rival Schools was also a rock solid 60fps, when I'm pretty sure there were drops into the 40fps region.
Did i miss a speedup being documented in the release notes for a particular MAME release?.

[EDIT] had the game names and drivers mixed up :P
You can browse the older whatsnew.txt and search for a specific driver to view more information.

Testing 0.147 (vanilla) on my old 2.8GHz Celeron, Tekken 2 did seem a bit faster compared with my self-compiled 0.145u1 build. The first demo fight was ~60% vs ~53%, with the time record screen after the fight at ~80% vs ~74%.
Code:
C:\Games\mame>mame147 tekken2ub Average speed: 69.07% (78 seconds)
C:\Games\mame>mame145u1 tekken2ub Average speed: 64.22% (78 seconds)

OK, now i know for sure that some MAJOR speedup has happened with this driver...just played Tekken Tag with interlaced mode on (which normally killed my frame rate from the get go)...now it's like this..
...nice work Devs!!!!

We haven't done anything to those drivers that I know of, but the newer compiler certainly could have helped.

Could it now be making much more efficient, balanced use of my two CPU cores, due to the new compiler?

There have been random unexplained speedups a couple of times with the PS1 games.
Unless someone is prepared to investigate why it sped up then we'll never know.

No, the compiler can't thread things behind our back. PSX runs entirely on one core, aside from the final blit if you use -mt.
