MAME 0.173 refreshspeed and triplebuffer options cause audio distortion
#353804 - 05/01/16 08:51 PM

I was curious if anyone is experiencing audio distortion problems starting with MAME 0.173 with the refreshspeed and triplebuffer options enabled in mame.ini? Donkey Kong and Xevious are good examples. I confirmed that 0.172 and several prior versions do not have this issue. All other options in mame.ini are at the default setting. Using MAME 64 bit on Windows 10 64 bit, processor is Intel Core i7-4790K (4 GHz), 16 gig mem, NVidia 780ti Video card with latest drivers with a Samsung LED 1080p monitor. Using triplebuffer to fix screen tearing in games like Xevious and refreshspeed to previously fix audio distortion, hiccups, etc. I've been successfully using MAME for years with these options and this problem just occurred with 0.173.

Not sure if it helps, but see the following link where Aaron Giles previously fixed this:

I've experienced audio desync with those options enabled in previous mame versions, when recorded an avi output, but only at the video, not in the game. Every avi I did, after above 5 min playing, suffered a sound lag..

Fortunately not in the games as I said.

Refreshspeed appears to be broken in 173. Gradius and Ms. Pacman are two that I've noticed it with. Doesn't work with vsync either.

Thanks! I was trying to get access to MAME Testers myself to report this and you beat me to it! I also tried Ms. Pac-Man and have bad audio distortion with refreshspeed enabled.

I can't wait for gsync/freesync monitors to come down so I can finally be free of this refresh rate hell.

I picked up a 24" gsync monitor a couple weeks ago for $349 US plus tax. Hoping to sell my old monitor for $150 or so. The freesync monitors are around $50 - $100 less.

I found this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...2-308-_-Product

But even though it supports Freesync, it says its refresh rate is 60Hz. If thats its maximum, then that is useless for anything above 60Hz, like Ms. Pacman.

Looks like I need to be looking for the 144Hz variety, but then I'm also requiring Freesync work over HDMI. Not wasting any money on Display Port. Pisses me off that Dell spearheads its creation as a license free alternative to HDMI and then leaves it off most of its monitors.

At least one guy on the internet says that that monitor has a freesync range of 48-75Hz. I'd hate to spend my money and find out that he was wrong and it really is 60Hz max. But I'm fine with spending your money. Do it for science!

I went with a 40in 4K TV for a monitor for now. Tops out at 60Hz, 4:4:4 color isn't working right, and the motion blur is more than I'd like. So maybe I need a freesync/gsync monitor to go with it.

I don't understand why its so hard for a company like Samsung to provide that info in the spec sheet.

Haha, It resembles an expensive Apple product while having a dirt cheap price point. They are hoping the masses see wireless phone charging, sleek and glossy, and $179 immediately adding it to cart and checking out without thinking.

I wouldn't pay 75 bucks with free shipping for that POS

I don't see the point in curved screens, either. That being said, I usually don't sink more than $250 in a monitor. I don't require the best of everything otherwise, my PC would have something a little better than a Phenom II CPU. Everything I want to play, runs on this PC, with the exception of Dreamcast, PS2 and Naomi stuff.

IIRC german website prad.de reviewed it and measured something like 20ms input lag, which is way more that the usual 4~6ms simple Full-HD monitors often show.
This disqualifies it more than the shitty looks and gimmicks IMHO.

They have new cheap FreeSync models coming;

Code:

https://pcmonitors.info/samsung/samsung-s24f350fh-and-s27f350fh-full-hd-pls-models/

No idea if the lag will be better.
pcmonitors will probably review at least the 24".

But when it comes to entry-level/generic IPS, the LG brand are better, so I'd keep an eye on the upcoming 24MP68VQ-P & 27MP68VQ-P FreeSync of course)
