MAME seems to assign random light gun number to Aimtrak
#279225 - 03/14/12 04:34 PM

Hey guys, sorry if this should be posted elsewhere, has been discussed elsewhere or should be common knowledge... please don't beat me up...

I just started using an Aimtrak USB lightgun with MAME, and it works great, but for whatever reason MAME seemingly randomly changes which light gun it interprets my gun as being... it usually thinks it's gun 2, though frequently thinks it's gun 4 and rarely gun 3 (have never seen it call it gun 1).

My guess is this is really a windows thing, and it's seeing the gun, trackball and spinner all as USB mice... (that might not be 100% correct since it doesn't seem to interpret the ball or spinner as guns, but I think there's gotta be some sort of overlap going on here). Windows I believe has some funkiness on how it enumerates USB devices in general and I vaguely recall some utility to help renumber auto-detected joypads, so I'm guessing this is the same sort of thing. Anyone know exactly what's going on behind the scenes there? It's not a huge problem but it's a bit clunky to have to go in and remap the controls when it changes what it sees my gun as.

If it matters, the trackball and spinner are always plugged in and should be seen by windows the same way on every boot. The gun isn't plugged in when my system boots because I don't use it much and have no external USB ports on my cab, I open the keyboard drawer and plug it into a powered up but always use the same port on the hub.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts and comments!

That's correct. MAME can't solve it, but you could buy a hub with more ports and fix things that way, hopefully
