Strange color glitches in some games
#324639 - 04/13/14 02:50 PM Attachment: galaga.jpg 58 KB (1 downloads)

I'm using MAME .153 32 bit. On several games (galaga, all the sfa games, congo bongo and probably some others), the background colors are messed up. For instance, in galaga, the background, of course, should be black. But when I run the game, it will boot up as bright blue, or red, or green. It isn't always the same color. If I hit f3 to reset the game, it will just change to another color. I have tried disabling hlsl, deleting all the .ini, cfg, nvram files and reinstalling mame into a fresh new directory and nothing I've tried has fixed it. Sometimes the games will boot up with the correct black color, but not always. Anyone know what could be causing this?

Ok. I found out what's causing the problem. If I adjust the brightness to anything other than 1.0, it messes up the background color. I dunno if anyone can test this and see if this happens in any of the games I listed. But at least I found a workaround. I just better make sure I don't adjust the brightness of those games

Yep it busted. Tested on the SVN build that I made last night. Same issue that you have. I will tell the guys at the other forum about this. Don't worry about this until official 0.154 which it be a while before it come out. Just say a few months or so.

Edit: OK this is random causes. Don't happen all the time. Seem to be something is going on. While back Dig Dug and Galaga having some issue on loading but got fix. Now this is another issue.

Oh by the way. Colors isn't the same as you have. Using the HLSL. If I turn it off then I will have that green. Just letting you know.

Strange bug.

I wonder what the commonality is in all those games are because it doesn't seem to affect all games in general.

This is fixed now in SVN. It's actually a very old bug that merely developed more obvious symptoms with the palette refactoring. Try turning up the brightness slider in 0.152 in games affected by the bug (e.g. galaga) You'll notice that the black background stays perfectly black no matter how much you increase the brightness, rather than brightening to grey like it should.
