Nah, 9 was skipped due to things checking for windows_9* or something similar for 95/98. There was never anything asking you to change to 8 (which was not free like this release), and the 7.x releases were all patches, which could have been automatic or ignored.
I think I'll say "yes" to this, despite reports of... something I'll not say here that doesn't really matter. Unless there's a good reason not to...?
I hid that update a while back. I wonder how it got unhidden and installed. Maybe this is a different KB number than before. Anyway, thanks for the link!
> I've been running 7 for years and never had any icons pop up asking me to upgrade. I > think I'm on Enterprise edition or something though.
Enterprise is apparently not among the versions of Windows that can get a free upgrade - only Home, Pro and Ultimate are.
I'm still waiting on Microsoft to say if Win 7 Ultimate users will get to upgrade to Win 10's version of it, or if we'll be stuck with Home or whatever.
98 had some bugs until 98SE iirc, but anyway there is some truth to the every 2nd version thing, you just have to use the ones users only used, and toss out the business targeted ones like Windows 2000 and NT. Though they were good when I used them at work.
I'm surprised they are going to the free model with it, maybe it's pressure from Apple.
Not yet. My....money....is on Elon Musk. (I've only known 'musk' via stinky weary fluid, and mention of pussy....until I actually knew it was a person in this case...)
My guess is free large-scale beta testing. The final version will cost money.
I don't, but I'm already running the Win 10 preview. It's really good - Win7 holdouts will feel right at home, and finally get the benefits of all the kernel tuning that happened in 8 and 8.1 (the OS uses less CPU and RAM so MAME can have more - Aaron's still looking out for us ;-)
The #1 problem I have with Windows 10 is that the Home edition (which is what I would get upgraded to from my Home Premium copy) wont let you say "hey Windows, don't install any updates, just tell me when there are updates to install and let me decide what to do" like I can with Windows 7. For a clueless user who doesn't know any better, making this the default and requiring a bit of effort to switch it off makes sense but it should be possible for those who DO know what they are doing to make their own decisions on updates.

The part of that that really bothers me is that updates supposedly will not be able to be backed out. So, when M$ screws up (it'll happen) and dropkicks some needed feature into oblivion, the only solution will be to wait for them to get a round tuit.
That's not a formula for success right there... -JW

So long as I can unpin or otherwise dispose of the stupid Live Tile things crammed in to the start menu, and remove the "search field in the taskbar" thing, I think I'll be OK with it. For some reason those UI features really bother me, almost to the point of anger... I think it's what I read as an implicit assumption on the part of the UI designers, "We know you people are all too stupid, lazy and/or vapid to organize, remember, or find anything on your own, so here's a puke-splatter of things that ought to keep you entertained, pinned to all available surfaces"

Cool man. I already sign up for a free update. So did my friend.

Whoot!
Now if I can only learn how to correctly say his last name...

(( I swear I posted this below, so if for some real odd reason it got yanked, go ahead and yank it again.... ))
Apparently it's going to be free for a year from July.
These are the things being removed. WMP will no longer play DVDs? My we've come a long way.
Feature deprecation section
·If you have Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 8 Pro with Media Center, or Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center and you install Windows 10, Windows Media Center will be removed.
·Watching DVDs requires separate playback software
·Windows 7 desktop gadgets will be removed as part of installing Windows 10.

WMP was never much of an MP, anyway. My laptop came with 2 other disk players installed, though it was lacking certain codecs.
> ·Windows 7 desktop gadgets will be removed as part of installing Windows 10.
I tried to update a gadget a few weeks ago, and they're all being killed due to "security issues."

So by "available" they mean "installed without consent."

"Released?" So, sold separately? Because they aren't worth buying, being available free from many others.

It's spelled, "Giles" but it's pronounced, "Throat Warbler Mangrove".

Nah, they're free in the Microsoft Windows app store. It's a con to get people to actually open the app store, no-one uses it.

They're also giving 10 free only to 7-ers, up. I forgot to mention that. They're making those still on XP pay.
@Triggerfin: I've always used WMP for music. My first computer had PowerDVD, and I used that for a while, but eventually went to WMP for all media, and have stayed there. DVDs are, or even Blu-ray is, a joke. I have....two DVDs, and no Blu-ray. If it ain't streamable or torrent, I don't watch it.
Gadgets I've not tried. I don't get feeds or news or anything, I don't use my PC for 'work' of any kind, so I can't imagine needing pretty much any of the new 'efficiency' features they've put in since 8. Except voice command....maybe......though I still haven't bothered to try that on my phone.....

The one gadget I installed and still use is a clipboard manager. All my ctrl+c are belong to the right side of the screen. I tried clocks, weather, and system info, but I didn't use them so they're gone.

My Windows Media Player is still sitting here.
The Solitaire & etc. games are NOT free: They force you to watch ads, unless you pay for A SUBSCRIPTION to them. They are now a paid service.
The app store is pretty crap: It's pretending to be XBox, but what it offers is rarely better than mobile. And like mobile, the free games hit you with a difficulty ramp just after they ask you to rate them, requiring the purchase of consumables to advance.
> The Solitaire & etc. games are NOT free: They force you to watch ads, unless you pay > for A SUBSCRIPTION to them. They are now a paid service.
That's not true for Solitaire at least. All the standard games (Solitaire, Spider Solitaire, etc.) are free. There's some "daily content" feature that requires you to see one ad each day or pay a subscription fee. If you don't click that button you don't see any ads.
The new Minesweeper games is total shit in terms of performance. Brings pretty much any machine to a crawl and sucks through battery on a tablet. Although that's not new in Windows 10, it's already like that in Windows 8.

All part of the same app.

I have to assume that a lot of games still come down to a final 50/50 guess at the last couple locations, so I likely won't ever see it.

I realise it's part of the same app, but it won't show you ads if you don't use the "daily content" feature. It's not like it forces you to. Besides, it's Windows Solitaire FFS. Surely you have better ways to waste time.

Sure. Some time last year I started a game of "Super 2048" on my phone. That's still going, but the one 2,xxx,xxx tile isn't even near the 4,xxx,xxx tile at this point.
My update just happened. Actually went pretty smooth except I had to load new drivers for my GQ-4X EPROM programmer, and spent a couple hours cussing (and fighting the urge to punch my laptop) over the N600 WiFi adapter (long story short, I *think* it had a problem with the adapter being plugged in a USB hub....I plugged it directly into the side of the laptop and it started working....then I moved it back to the hub and so far so good).
I'm sure I'll find plenty to whine/bitch about in the coming weeks, but for now I'm pretty "OK" with it.
Oh yea, one minor diff...SW Battlefront 1 isn't running full screen (I have a nice 17" display...about the only thing I really like about this HP Pavilion) and I haven't figured out how to "stretch" it like I could in Win7.
