DU: Konami's Dive Bomber Squad Released & Emulated
#355441 - 06/08/16 02:23 AM

I'm happy to announce the immediate release of Konami's Dive Bomber Squad (急降下爆撃隊 in Japan and planned to be GAIA in overseas regions) and the inclusion of it in the next release of MAME.

This is a monumental release of what is considered the most wanted prototype in Japan as it was featured in Gamest, displayed at various trade shows and includes a member of Treasure in its credits. The previous known prototype was actually confiscated by Konami mafia style from the last collector so this final remaining copy in our hands was the last chance to preserve this for posterity.

I personally put out $8300 USD to acquire this from a MAME unfriendly source and keep it from being hoarded. Thanks to the international effort from the community in donations, everyone can enjoy this piece of history.

I'd like to particular show gratitude to our truly international DU team who helped make this happen. Fellow DU member, Andy Welburn, of andys-arcade.com fame flew to Tokyo from the SF Bay Area to help with the extensive desolder work and the now retired Haze in the UK who figured out the uniquely convoluted hardware to make it playable. Crossing international borders, different people of different walks came together to make it happen. Looking forward to more international collaborations and I encourage Japanese collectors to work with us as these PCBs and their devices are at the end of life stage. There is no point to hoarding a game if it dies and there is no way to repair it.

That's it for this episode, I continue to fight the good fight in the land of the rising sun.

PS: The sound is really that primitive and HANGZO is coming soon.

Fact-check, Haze edition new [Re: ShouTime]
#355445 - 06/08/16 05:23 AM

* He opens by suggesting that he was the only person willing to work on the driver. This is false: it's almost as though he kept it away from everyone else.

* He claims to have "surrendered" his direct commit access. This is false: he never removed himself from the MAMEdev organisation on Github or from the MAME repository. He was removed due to the fact that a person with direct push access who isn't on the mailing list is a problem waiting to happen.

* He claims he can't submit it himself. This is false and absurd: he knows we have a code submission address and accept pull requests.

* He pulls his usual, "I'm sure one of the devs will..." line. He still thinks he's too important to have to write decent code.

I'm half-inclined to say the MAME team shouldn't accept the driver on general principle because his attitude is shocking. If the rest of us actually had ROMs and whatever other info Andy gleaned we could probably do a better job anyway without resorting to things like random read handlers.

It won't but apparently some mamedevs are really pissed at Haze because of whatever he wrote in that blog post. I don't know what it is because I haven't read it yet on account of it's a book long. Personally I find the length offensive, like I have all day for a video game blog post.

That freaking sucks!

I didn't think there would be Drama with what seemed like such a cool story about progress and people coming together to make this happen.

I'm mostly offended on account that his arm is broken and he somehow typed up The Stand as a blog post.

From what I have been told, apparently, the last proto PCB was put on display at an event and Konami thugs came strolling in then proceeded to strong arm the owner to return it to them for free or else.

I've been advised not to display the PCB at an upcoming large retro event on Sunday due to this.

Damn Shoutime does a great thing for the community as a whole, Andy flies to Japan to help dump it, haze writes a driver for it (complete, incomplete who knows).

Shoutime posts on this board about it, haze writes a post on how it appears to work and both talk and thank all those involved and instead of taking a moment to think about how awesome this is and how as both commented, spanned several continents to come to life and all that people get from it is to draw out a few certain comments to draw dumbass drama out of it?

Some of you need to really grow up, in fact go home and slap your mamma for not taking you off the tit at an earlier age......

Anyway thank you Shoutime, Andy, haze and anyone and everyone else who worked to make this happen ! Much appreciated !

I'd heard rumors about Konami's association with um, some less than legal organizations. I guess it's not so much of a rumor after all, eh?

Stay safe, man. We don't want you getting harassed for helping us out. We're all very grateful for your preservation efforts.

If they are willing to go to such lengths to get their PCB back, I do wonder how far they will go (or try to go) to shut down distribution of any emulator code that emulates the game.

When you say "Konami thugs", you mean actual Konami employees and/or the muscle they hired?

Or do you mean "Konami thugs" as in collectors/gamers who are obsessed with Konami products.

Because that would be crazy if it was actually the Konami company itself that sent or hired people to steal it. This would go viral and be on the news if somebody went public with this information.

I would never let them steal it from me. I'd fight them if I had to and if it meant getting beat up, then so be it. I'd also call the cops and the news media.

Depends on how the board was leaked out of Konami. Konami would have every right to do so if it wasn't authorized. It was/is their property.

Also it would also depend on the laws in Japan.

If the boards were taken from Konami without permission then the boards are stolen property and Konami has every right to demand their property back.

Slowly.

ShouTime wanted a nice post about the game, showing how the community could really work together, and do things in a discreet but professional way when needed in order to aid the preservation cause.

The way people have derailed it, twisted my words, or whatever else is just absurd, I don't claim to be special, but once again people are *making up* rules to apply to me, eg. things about submissions, we've always had cases where somebody prefers to work with somebody else, submissions have been done on behalf of others etc. but suddenly that's not OK.

The whole thing was about building bridges, but it seems the blind rage and hatred some have towards me have now burned many more than we built, for no reason. I know some want to force me out completely, and it seems the method is now twisting anything I do, no matter how good the intentions, into something bad so that it appears I'm harming the project.

I wasn't planning on being here today to write this, but had to pop home to pick up more festival supplies, we got washed out. Rammstein put on a spectacular show tho.

Seriously, enjoy the contribution, although I'm now half expecting another dev to rewrite it out of spite* (under some other guise when what I have is at worst a perfectly workable base) just to avoid giving me credit, which would be a real indication of where team priorities lie; there are still a bunch of drivers that actually need rewriting due to license conflicts. The irony is I don't actually care about credit, I care about figuring things out, and preservation, and they've been figured out and preserved - I even wrote a simplified version of my thought processes in the article in order to aid others in the future yet I see devs attacking my tried and tested methods of 15 years to score points too.

* wouldn't be the first time, see Monkey Magic driver where Hau's perfectly acceptable driver was ignored just because people wished to punish him.

As I said tho, it's emulated, it's something we couldn't even have imagined being emulated just a few years ago, and from the sounds of it, it's a minor miracle it was possible to write that post at all, so, concentrate on that please. It saddens me to see what was an optimistic and interesting thing turned to shit.

There's a difference between right to demand and jack a foo for their board.

Also, I'd imagine they would have to have physical proof of ownership and the theft itself.

Nice try, but you're approx 180 degrees off. Have faith in the silent majority that doesn't care for drama and twisting your remaining arm.

Now seriously, your driver is being cleaned up and will be submitted by a senior dev. Thanks for your hard work!
