Mame32 depositing folders on desktop

Friends -
Help! All of the sub-folders for mame32 (ini, sta, nvram, etc.) are getting deposited onto my desktop whenever mame32 gets executed and has anything updated (e.g. new game played, game options changed, etc.)
How can I get the updates to take hold in the folders they are supposed to live in without getting deposited to the desktop everytime I run mame32? Thanks in advance for any advice.

How do you run MAME32? Double click a shortcut? Then most likely the start/run in folder setting (or whatever it is called in the shortcut) is pointing to your desktop.
Change to the MAME32 folder and run it from there (or fix the shortcut)
