Actually, CD-i Emulator is pretty decent, and I'm happy to direct people to it if it means it gets people off my case, so I can look into other, funner, things in MAME. It has better compatibility than MAME at least, and while compatibility isn't 100%, there are some notable bugs that MAME has which CD-i Emulator doesn't, like Zelda's Adventure hanging when you try to walk off the first screen.
The best advice I can give is to throw a game at MAME and see if it works. If it's a game that required the Digital Video Cartridge, it definitely won't work, but other than that, your guess is as good as mine. If it doesn't work, there's always CD-i Emulator, and look at it this way - you get a 5-minute trial to see if the game you want to use with it works, and it's still cheaper than getting an actual CD-i off of eBay and buying games for it.
