Softlist location

Where do people usually keep softlist stuff? In a folder called softlist? I still have 2 installations that pretty much match, except one has /MESS/roms and the other Mame32UI/roms. It's kind of silly to have them separate, but I'm not so sure it's a good idea to simply merge both /roms folders.
Also, over the years of updates, and trying different frontends and such, I seem to have let my folders get out of control. Does the current MAME self-extractor have all possible folders in it, or are there optional items that work out of their own folder? I ask because I started placing all .dat files in /dats, but grabbing the latest history.dat just now, it's pre-packaged in a /history folder (and I don't seem to be using a /history folder).
Also in my MESS directory, I have a few cheat.7z files in the root for different systems. Should I leave them as .7z in the root or drop them into /cheats or extract them into /cheats?
It seems I'm always out when the major changes take place and now I'm lost, with 1 final long deployment ahead of me shortly. Edit: and I'm aware that at least most of the current folder system for extra files has been in place for quite a while, I just never touched MESS much before the merger and didn't follow all the questions when it happened...

I use 3 folders:
roms/ - MAME ROMs (including BIOSes and device ROMs)
mamechds/ - arcade CHDs
MESSLists/ - software list ROMs and CHDs
I probably should have 4 for symmetry, but the existence of software list CHDs took me by surprise even though I was partially responsible

rompath option supports multiple locations separated by semicolon, so it's best you keep all your stuff separate. I have mine like this

rompath "J:\MAME ROMs (T7Z-Merged);J:\MAME CHDs;J:\MAME Software List ROMs (T7Z-Merged);L:\MAME SOFTWARE LIST CHDs"
Get the latest cheat.7z and put cheat.7z in the same location as your mame executable. (Do NOT EXTRACT cheat.7z), The latest cheat file has all the console stuff, so you don't need those different files anymore.

I have my MAME arcade ROMs D:\mame_roms\ folder and all MESS machines in d:\mess_roms\
All software list games are in sub-folders of the \mess_roms\ folder as I like to keep them separate from the arcade ROMs.
the software lists must be placed in sub-folders named the same as their software list names
Atari 2600 ROMs must be in a2600 sub-folder (d:\mess_roms\a2600\)
MSX 1 cartridge must be in msx_cart sub-folder (d:\mess_roms\msx1_cart\)
You do NOT need to define the softlist sub-folders in mame.ini, only the main folders. I have mine like this.

MAME will search games in software list name sub-folders automatically.

More than 1.8 TB, in fact. Don't have ANY because of my 500GB/month bandwidth limit... Dunno where to start!
Thanks all for the answers. How about the thing with the .7z cheat files? Leave them as .7z and put them in /cheats?
