120Hz LCD

This may be a dumb question, but with a 120Hz LCD/LED monitor, do you actually set the refresh rate in Windows to 120Hz? In other words, would this avoid the sync problems with MAME when running non-60Hz games? I mostly run MAME on my CRTs, but I was playing around with HLSL on my 23" LCD and it does look pretty sweet, especially with bezel artwork filling the sides of the widescreen. If I can avoid the glitching in non-60Hz games, I could almost be convinced to drop the CRTs altogether.
