The list of things that can legitimately have more power over a person's life than the person himself has is rather short.
Your parents, if you're a child. Your boss, if you're currently at work. A god, if you believe in one. A thing which you've chosen to believe has all the powers of a god, but are pretending isn't one because you don't want to admit that you believe in such things. Your master, if you're a slave. Anything else, if you belong in a place with locked doors and barred windows.
I may have missed a corner or two, but that about covers it. Nothing which is not the direct cause of your current state of existence is of greater power in your life than you are, and barring religion, you are the direct cause of your current state of existence.
