I had the same thing on my 3GHz system, hard drive would get past the POST, start loading Windows then *clunk*, *chatter*, continue to load stuff, *clunk*, *chatter* and/or dump a BSOD (with Windows XP generating its "failed to load Windows" message upon rebooting. Turned out to be a faulty molex plug (the machine is using an IDE drive, and the outermost connector), and simply using the other connector on the same set of cables has made the drive work flawlessly ever since.
