Yeah, sure — same outcome in the end.
I think you’re giving him too much credit, though. It’s more likely that in his own mind, there’s a chance that someone (e.g. Big Bad Micko) would get angry about a working CV1000 driver. So he does it this way for plausible deniability: “Whoops, did I commit that? I didn’t mean to, honest! I had it in my working tree because I keep it running across MAME core updates. I only meant to commit the new clone code!”
It’s also possible that he actually did just have it in his working source because he’s been keeping the code running across core updates, and he only intended to commit the new clone support code from any. Genuine accidents do happen.
