Personal preference: only need to use the layout plugin if there is no way to show all of the different inputs without using the plugin. In the case of Espial, earlier in this thread, where it uses an 8-way joystick and the inputs are spread across multiple ports, it is totally necessary.
For something like 005, where it uses a 4-way joystick, you can simply treat each direction as a single button, since we will never display the diagonals.
(Dang... feels nice to work on something artwork related... RL work has been overwhelming this year).
RELAX and just have fun. Remember, it's all about the games.
