joystick stopped working

Hi All,
Hoping someone may be able to help please. My MAME arcade joysticks have stopped working. I used a test light yesterday to check a wire on back of the joy 1 as my multimeter was flat and now during gameplay only neither P1 or P2 joystick will work, They work ok navigating through the game menu but not during a game. I hit TAB and can bring up the interface menu but cannot navigate it with the joy or the keyboard. Driving me crazy as I can no longer play any games. Buttons all still working fine. Game ex version 14.03
