Using your "true Christian" argument a.k.a. "No true Scotsman" is ridiculous. I felt what was called the holy spirit many times up until I was a teenager and was pressured to go on a "mission" meaning going all over the world to spread the message of god. Most of my childhood friends had already left for their mission but I did something different than they did....I studied. If I was going to make a commitment to go and spread what I believed what the truth was, I wanted to make sure I KNEW it was the truth. In studying I found the lies, cover ups, hypocrisy and immoral things about my own religion at the time, as well as with Christianity (yes, the Mormons consider themselves Christians, even if other religions don't think so) entirely.

I came to the conclusion that I couldn't be a part of an organization (I'm talking about the Mormon's here...) who practiced polygamy in it's early days (All Mormon's with the exception of the fundamentalists discredit and abhor polygamy today), practiced all-out racism by not letting members of "color" hold any kind of position in the church, (god said "they weren't ready yet") who looked at women as inferior and subservient to their husbands (still do), and who are intolerant of homosexuals.

In digging up the skeletons on my own religion at the time, I also discovered the history of the Christian, namely Catholic religions as well. Long story short, I couldn't be a part of an organization that has EVER acted in such inhumane and evil ways and consider it holy or pure anymore. The Catholic, Mormon, Islam, and most other mainstream religions wouldn't have the followings they do, in the locations of the world that they do without spreading their beliefs through fear, violence, murder and torture. The evidence is all there of religion's dirty past.

Sure you can pick out the good and warm parts of your holy books and claim that religion is about peace and love, but cozying right up next to those good verses are verses of violence, intolerance, damnation, guilt and shame.

The god of the old testament was a jealous, spiteful, murderous god because he was actually Yahweh, a tribal god of war....one of 3 gods that were worshiped at the time before the religion became monotheistic. the god of the new testament became more kind and loving and gentle because many pagan beliefs and rituals were included so that more of the local people who were pagan would come to the church.

I won't go into more history....you could study it for yourself if your religion would actually let you instead of telling you to fall back on faith.
