Got Windows 8.1 on a new-ish laptop in September 2014. After much investigation (Classic Shell, many others) and checking on resource friendliness, responsiveness, similarity to previous Start menus, etc... I ended up dropping $7.99 on Stardock's Start8 and ModernMix and didn't look back. This basically solved both these problems and then some.
