Just tested both on Windows and Linux, and didn't get a crash there. You'll have to do more to isolate what's causing it.

edit: There are only two calls to osd_printf_verbose in running_machine::start_all_devices and only one of them has arguments that are not string literals. The arguments are the device name and tag, and if one of those is not a valid string, there's something very wrong with your build. Are you using weird compile options?
