What's on your "most wanted" list?
#106200 - 03/23/07 11:48 PM

With all the technical discussion about PNGs and ZIPs and compression ratios, I thought I'd change things up a little and talk about artwork. Just for fun I thought I'd put together a list of my "most wanted" artwork. These aren't in any particular order and they do not reflect any priority for Mr. Do or anyone else working on the artwork project. It's just for discussion. Do you see one of your favorites on here? The ones I know Mr. Do has access to are marked. What else would you have added?

EDIT: See Mr. Do's Work in Progress Page and post #1 and post #2.

These games use backdrops, overlays or lamps/LEDs or have something else unusual going on. The artwork really adds to these games.

Vector games. I really like vector games. No new vector games are being produced. I think that makes them even more important for preservation. IMO.

All other pre-1980 games have been moved to THIS POST.

There is also a separate post for Laserdisc games.

Post 1980s games. This is not a complete list, just some of my favorite games and/or artwork.

These 2 would be on wanted list, since the backdrop pieces are incorporated into gameplay....especially Gremlin's Safari. Without the backdrop support users would be unsure how Gremlin's Safari really works. This used to be the case with Frogs many years ago when there was little or no artwork support. Frogs gameplay wouldn't make sense unless one had opportunity to see actual cab and how the game works.

>M79 Ambush (RamTek 1977) Uses a backdrop
>Safari (Gremlin 1977) Uses backdrop

While on subject of Gremlin, the Frogs front bezel piece needs to be found also.

>Circus (Exidy 1977) Bezel/marquee with lamps similar to Skydiver

This and Midway Clowns is another needing to be found.

Clowns bezel piece is magnificent.....much better than the gameplay of Clowns. imo Circus sounds were always better than Clowns. I played both games in arcades in late 1970's.

>Subs (Atari 1977) Uses backdrop

I don't recall Atari Subs using a backdrop. I do recall an overlay piece being used
with monitor. I'll have to look again. I know I have cab photos on a disc somewhere.

>Tornado Baseball (Midway 1976) In the works. Uses backdrop

Now in Mr. Do's hands after handing piece to Mr. Do on Wednesday.

>Dog Patch (Midway 1977)

Needs everything. bezel, interior side scenery pieces, backdrop.

That's my list.

As for non-cpu games, PSE Desert Patrol still has a couple interior artwork pieces needing to be added. Desert Patrol has an orange interior overlay piece, but also an overlay piece that is mounted directly onto monitor, iirc, that has printed text for indicating remaining time and scores. Without that, only numbers, plane images, and parachute pilots are visible....gameplay wouldn't make sense.

Good list

If you don't mind, I'm going to steal this from you, as I've been wanting to get around to something similar to this; just couldn't get myself started.

I can comment on a few of them right now:

Afterburner - Have both upright and cockpit bezels. Driver needs to be updated to support the lamps.

Atari Baseball - Have a scan of the control panel; just need to get off my a$$ and finish it. Also have the outer bezel, which you could probably vector in an hour. Bobby Tribble sent me a photo of the inner bezel, which needs some work/distortion worked out first.

Atari Football - Inner bezel same as above. Don't have the outer.

Circus - I had a lead; it died again =P

Datsun 280 ZZZap - As you said, in process of being scanned.

Destroyer - I thought yaggy already took pics (I could be mistaken), but I'm haven't gotten them yet. I do know he said he has access to one.

Extra Inning - Yes, same backdrop as Tornado with just a slight alteration. Double Play also uses this backdrop, BTW.

Gridiron Fight - Have the scan; driver needs to be updated for the LED.

Space Encounters - Makes my head hurt what I'll have to do to make this work, but yes, in the works.

Space Tactics - Sounds like a challenge to me; I'll have to look at it.

Subs - Re-creation from photos and manual complete; somethings still quirky, though (more details later).

Tornado Baseball - Just picked up the backdrop yesterday.

Triple Hunt - These will take work.

Video Pinball - xiaou2 will come thru - *crosses fingers*

Aztarac - working on it now

Eliminator - need to scan

Omega Race Cockpit - Anyone got $70?

Tailgunner - Have the cockpit version, though it's broken at the top, which needs "creative fixing"

WOTW - Emails not replied to in over two months. He said he had sent someone else the full-size scan; anyone know who?

Atari Basketball - Have it

Centipede - Actually, upright, cabaret, cocktail, and euro all in the works

Dig Dug - *kicks self for not grabbing the cabaret bezel the day I saw it*

Domino Man - may be able to be re-created easily; got some good pics at home

Paperboy - didn't have a bezel, sorry

Puckman - I want this as much as zorg; for now, we have a Bell-Fruit version coming, which is modeled after the original (but still not the same)

Rampage - "may" have access to one, we'll see

Universal stuff - may have a lead on a bunch of this stuff; we'll see if the collector is co-operative.

---------------

Yup, I'd say it's high time I made a needed soon page.

I thought that one looked "busy" enough that scanning would be the way to go.
I haven't seen parts auctions lately of that bezel piece. There was an auction way
back in 2005 iirc.

Nope. Main bezel is dominos; simple lines, corners, and circles on that one. I have a damaged cocktail bezel that will help with the accuracy of it.

For the instructions in the middle, the control panel pic has them bright and clear, so that covers that part, too.

Well one of my hopes is that PinMAME will be updated someday to mainline to take advantage of the enhanced artwork features. It'd be perfect for pins that had lamps and DMDs in the backglass.

I'm glad someone started a "most wanted" list similar to the dumping page...It was needed and will come in handy.
Can't wait to see how Budweiser and those other bezels(like the Universal one Mr. Do borrowed) turn out. You probably want me to pick those up one of these days since it sounds like you've got a house full of artwork...Got some other stuff like a ton of marquees(some Mr. Do hasn't seen yet) that need eventual scanning as well.
I'd let you borrow my Astro Invader bezel, but the paint flakes if you look at it wrong. We'll work something out though.

My furniture: Holosseum, Pac-Man, Gauntlet: Dark Legacy, DigDug, Tron, Astro Invader, Donkey Kong Jr., Centipede, Six-Pac, Tank! II cocktail, billiard table, and dartboard

this is the bezel I'm hunting down every where.

I dream to have the original bezel, not only the scan

PS as MrDO. mentioned a puckman bezel (not hte namco, unfortunatly) will pop out pretty soon.

Great. You might get a big "Thank You" from the "ultimate Q Bert fan" later since Domino Man bezel is a bezel she wanted to see.

Hey,

How did replicating that coin box project work out for Six Pac cocktail table?

>I'm glad someone started a "most wanted" list similar to the dumping page...It was
> needed and will come in handy.

Yep. Last year everything was needed, so it didn't matter at that time of getting a list started as Mr. Do mentioned at the time.

>Can't wait to see how Budweiser and those other bezels(like the Universal one Mr. Do
> borrowed) turn out. You probably want me to pick those up one of these days since it

For me, the only artwork pieces I have/had is Midway Tornado Baseball backdrop piece which I handed to Mr. Do on Wednesday. That backdrop piece is practically on its last legs since it has a few cracks. It would be great if it can be repaired and re-used again for a Tornado Baseball upright cab. I don't know if it is repairable.

The only other is the PSE Desert Patrol bezel piece and marquee piece....now fortunately scanned, cleaned up, (not fully vectorized yet), and hosted on Mr. Do's site.

Mr. Do has all the inventory including an Astro Laser cocktail table piece for scanning.

That's one you'd want to message to Mr. Do about.

it will be fully as soon as possible, I'm pretty busy with some cabinet restoration. Xevious and Midway Space Invaders.

Xevious artwork eat me a lot of time.

next week I'll be abble to borrow some time for tracing stuff.

No hurry there, just thanks with getting the Desert Patrol pieces started.

I am glad Mr. Do was able to get the Desert Patrol pieces scanned before Astro Laser cocktail table piece arrived at Mr. Do's front door.

That Astro Laser scan project and size of that Astro Laser table piece could keep Mr. Do busy scanning for nearly a month. :-)

That table piece is extremely large and then some.

Did Clowns use the lamps also? I've never seen a good picture of this one.

I think I miss type. Should have said Overlay. I wasn't speaking from expereince. I've never played the game on a real machine, just read on MAWS.

I wasn't sure about a backdrop for Dog Patch. I didn't save copies of the pictures you posted. Thanks for the clarification.

I'm not tracing the bezel, just traced the CPO and attraction panel for my own cab.

The early days: Pre-1980 games new [Re: jcroach]
#106587 - 03/29/07 12:04 AM

OK, so I guess I'm a fiend for lists. I went through MAWS and noted every game made before 1980 that included decorated bezels, but I hadn't already mentioned in the first post (Vector games and games with lamps/LEDs, backdrops or overlays). There's quite a few! Note that this list is limited to the games that had visible bezels in the cabinet images. I likely missed some, especially if there isn't a cabinet image in MAWS or the game hasn't been emulated yet.

These were the days before Pac-Man and the arcade explosion of the early 1980s. Lots of great but forgotten games here, with some interesting artwork. I especially like the Universal games, Crash, Robot Bowl, Sky Raider and Atari Basketball.

  • 3D Bowling (Meadows 1978) Used interior cardboard scenery.
  • Ace (Allied Leisure 1976)
  • Acrobat TV (Taito 1977) Same as Exidy Circus, but didn't use lamps(?). Image
  • Amazing Maze (Midway 1976) Done.
  • Astro Fighter (Data East 1979)
  • Barricade (RamTek 1976) DONE.
  • Basketball (Atari 1979) Outer bezel Done!. Inner bezel and "crowd" image in the works.
  • Blasto (Gremlin 1978)
  • Bomb Bee (Namco 1979)
  • Cascade (Sidam 1978) Atari Avalanche clone.
  • Clowns (Midway 1978) In the works.
  • Cops'n Robbers (Atari 1976) In the works (TrevEB)
  • Cosmic Alien (Universal 1979) In the works (Mikonos)
  • Cosmic Guerilla (Universal 1979) Done!
  • Cosmic Monsters (Universal 1979)
  • Cosmic Monsters 2 (Universal 1979)
  • Cosmo (TDS & Mints 1979) Did this game have a decorated bezel?
  • Crash (Exidy 1979) This game's ROMs are now freely available for non-commercial use. In the works.
  • Cutie Q (Namco 1979) Did this game have a decorated bezel?
  • Deep Scan (Sega 1979)
  • Dead Eye (Meadows 1978) Done!
  • Dodgem (Zaccaria 1979)
  • Field Goal (Taito 1979) Used inner and outer bezel.
  • Fire One (Exidy 1979) Very cool split screen bezel. This game's rom is now freely avaialble for non-commercial use. In the works (TrevEB)
  • Galaxian (Zaccaria 1979)
  • Galaxian (Namco 1979) Midway and European Namco versions Done! Japanese Namco Version needed.
  • Gee Bee (Namco 1978)
  • Hit Me (RamTek 1976) only pre-1980 gambling game currently in MAME. Blackjack themed.
  • Hustle (Gremlin 1977)Done! Taito version also needed. Image
  • Invader's Revenge (Zenitone-Microsec Ltd. 1979) Done!
  • Invasion (Sidam 1979) Space Invaders clone.
  • Lazer Command (Meadows Games, Inc. 1976) Both upright and cabaret versions.
  • Lunar Rescue (Taito 1979) Done! Space Invaders conversion version also needed. Bezel was the same as the border on this flyer.
  • Minesweeper (Amutech 1977)
  • Monte Carlo (Atari 1979)
  • Moon Base (Nichibutsu 1979) Space Invaders Part II licensed clone.
  • Pool Shark (Atari 1977)DONE.
  • Rip Cord (Exidy 1979) Bezel in the works! (TrevEB) Did this game use a blue overlay? The flyer seems to imply that it did. This game's rom is now freely available for non-commercial use.
  • Robot Bowl (Exidy 1977) In the works (myclone). This game's rom is now freely available for non-commercial use.
  • Rolling Crash / Moon Base (Nichibutsu 1979)

  • Side Track (Exidy 1979) This game's rom is now freely available for non-commercial use. In the works (TrevEB)
  • Sky Raider (Atari 1978) Used outer bezel, interior scenery art and inner bezel/opaque overlay. Cabinet similar to Destroyer & Starship 1. Additional pictures
  • Smokey Joe (Atari 1978)[/url] Done! One player version of Fire Truck

>M-4 (Midway 1977) Did this game use a backdrop or overlay?

My Midway M-4 parts catalog confirms backdrop and interior side scenery pieces as follows:

----------
0626-00902-01SC Side scenery card - left
0626-00902-02SC Side scenery card - right
0626-00903-00SC Background scenery card
------

No mention of transparent overlay piece.

Sizeable list there. And that doesn't include non-cpu games.

Got a nice start with Atari Tank 2, Atari Pong, Monaco GP, and a minor portion of PSE Desert Patrol artwork....which there is also an interior overlay piece that provides text description such as "Time Remaining", "Score", etc. That piece hasn't been found yet.

Video Pinball clone?!?! new [Re: jcroach]
#106680 - 03/30/07 04:04 PM

This is for all the Video Pinball lovers. I've never seen this game before. It's not in MAWS and presumably not in MAME, but I found it on TAFA.

The game's called Rugby and is from the Italian company Sidam. It appears to be a Video Pinball clone from the 1970s, complete with new playfield.

Who knew?!

Link to flyer.

It's a Wanted Dump.

Sidam
"Rugby" (1979) -- clone of Atari's "Video Pinball" (!)

TAFA says 1976 for the release, but I suspect that's incorrect.

I got partial pics of this one and I heard Kiltron was working on it.
There's another piece of it sitting at Karasu's place which I think he's hoarding along with some undumped PCBs I bought and had sent to him possibly almost a year ago! Anyone live near Ohio? Need someone to visit him with half a dozen of your mates and kick his ass a bit.

Not hoarding; just other circumstances that I don't think he wants to talk about here.

Why wouldn't you? I think everyone who had seen their cabs in real life will never forget them. And it usually is not because of the gameplay, though there had been quite a few really nice ones as well admittedly.

I don't see any issues apart from an amazing and appalling amount of laziness. I paypalled him US$200 to pack it up and send it all in one or two boxes. Given almost 1 year, that's surely do-able. So far nothing has happened.
Come on, surely there's someone in Ohio who wants to kick ass? ;-)
I'll put $200 on the line as a reward to whoever gets the job done and gets those items/packages out to me.

I thought about this one too. It's really a classic cabinet. It might end up looking like Mr. Do's recent Tron monitor shroud. It have to be done from photographs becasue of the 3D nature of the art.

I remember seeing a low-rez version of this game's bezel art for pre-0.107 MAME. It was based on a photograph taken with the bezel laying flat, so you could unforunately see the "top" of the bezel piece that would normally be hidden under the top of the cabinet. It might have been from this image at KLOV:

For it to look right, you'd have to take the picture at the same angle that you'd view the cabinet. You;d have to decide where to "cut off" the bezel too. Maybe right above the control panel.

Most wanted list one year later new [Re: jcroach]
#147511 - 03/27/08 07:57 PM

Bump

Just thorough I'd bump this up show the kind of progress that has been made in just a short year. I've been keeping this list up to date all year.

Full artwork for some of my favorites:
After Burner (Sega 1987)
Chase H.Q. (Taito 1988)
Subs (Atari 1977)
Space Fury (Sega 1981)
Devil Zone (Universal 1980)
Domino Man (Bally Midway 1982)
Magical Spot (Universal 1980)
Mouse Trap (Exidy 1981)
Ms. Pac-Man (Midway 1981)
Rampage (Bally Midway 1986)
Tetris (Atari Games 1988)
Barricade (RamTek 1976)
Super Breakout (Atari 1978)
Space Encounters (Midway 1980)
Space Tactics (Sega 1981) Lamps Done!

Lots of other great classic games with at least partial artwork and even more that I didn't have on these lists. Thank you Mr. Do! and all of the other contributors.

Looking forward to such great games as Video Pinball, the backdrop for Tornado Baseball/Extra Innings, Circus, Berzerk, Moon Patrol and reworked Boot Hill!

I played both actually: a seating cabinet and a vertical one. The former one was much better to play, the latter could have been unlicensed (you know italian arcades...)

So, do you think that flyer is of an unlicensed clone or is it possibly a different game with the same name?

a different game.. probably something like 'driftout', vertical, overhead.

World Rally wouldn't work as a vertical game ;-)

Laserdisc Games new [Re: jcroach]
#160942 - 08/15/08 10:42 PM

One more list for you all. This time laserdisc games, since that's what all the buzz is about lately.

I loved Dragon's Lair as a kid. I never played it often because it was 2x or sometime 4x the cost of other games. But I was fascinated by the cartoon like graphics. Cartoons and arcade games, great things for an 8 year old.

It's great to see laserdisc game support come to MAME. I can't wait for it to be working and the CHDs released! Some games listed still needed to be added to MAME.

Much like vector games, no new laserdisc games are being produced. I think that makes them even more important for preservation. IMHO. In some cases, the artwork is nearly essential to play the game, like the score counter on Dragon's Lair. Some of the rest of the art, like Bega's Battle or Esh's Aurunmilla for instance, is better than others.

Other "American Laser Games" games may have had European bezel art or used the Mad Dog McCree bezel. Confirmation needed.

EDIT: Added Laser Grand Prix. Thanks Tafoid
EDIT 8/16/08: Based on comments by Mr. Do.

There are quite a few missing if you are making a master list (taken from MAME):

zortonbr [Zorton Brothers (Los Justicieros)]
aplatoon [Platoon]
fastdraw [Fast Draw Showdown]
gallgall [Gallagher's Gallery]
lastbh [The Last Bounty Hunter]
maddog2 [Mad Dog II: The Lost Gold]
spacepir [Space Pirates]
wsjr [Who Shot Johnny Rock?]
cliffhgr [Cliff Hanger]
gpworld [GP World]
lgp [Laser Grand Prix]
Cube Quest (should be added to MAME soon)

I only listed games that I knew had bezel art. From KLOV, TAFA or other web sources. If you have pictures of the cabinets of any of these, I'd love to see them.

EDIT: Here's one from your list.

We have Cobra Command and Interstellar.

Don't think a "dedicated" DL2 has actual artwork.

99% positive the cockpit Mach-3 is the same as the standup

Cube Quest has instructions printed on the bottom of the bezel. And we need a "dedicated" keyboard panel for Thayer's Quest. Those pics can be seen here:

Great resource for pics is here:

Just a note on some of these, I think there are alternate bezels for ALG games in Europe,l since they were distributed by Atari. Certainly Mad Dog 2 had a little sticker for the gun holsters on the deluxe cab, that gave a vital gameplay hint that was missed off the disc. There may even be a Japanese Capcom bezel out there for it

As for COPS, the lights are the only clue as to how many shots and lives you have, there's no OSD other than the bullet mark itself (cheapass hardware FTW). There's also an alphanumeric display at the base of the screen for scoring etc.

Unfortunately, no - I went on a trip to try to get hold of a picture of the Mad Dog 2 overlay, but it seems to not be around in that location anymore.

Marginally related in the art forum, but since World Rally was brought up... it's still not added to the list of legal rom download page in mame world. Its an awesome game, and newcomers will miss out on it if they don't hunt the forums for legal rom posts. Who can i talk to about adding it to that list?

As far as I am aware, the arrangement that was made was to require people to goto Gaelco's site and get the rom there only. I think at the very least a link denoting such a fact should be on MAMEDEV as given the rate of releases, a person new to MAME wouldn't really have a clue that it's a not-for-profit download from the manufacturer.

Thanks for the link. I'm surprised they don't sell the geometric shapes that are placed inside of the cabinet. I did learn from that site that this game used a LED display for scoring. I wonder if "Holosseum" used the same display given that it was a conversion for this unique cabinet.

It's been dumped, but will only be included with good artwork support since it wouldn't really do anything without it, so worth an exception I would say.

I haven't seen any parts for sale or quality photos of Midway 18 Wheeler.

http://www.arcadeflyers.com/?page=thumbs&db=arcadedb&id=98

Ideal if someone has time to add support for the game even though it is a non-videoscreen game. It might share some features of Astrocade driver. It is z80 cpu controlled and uses roms.

http://mamedev.org/source/src/mame/drivers/astrocde.c.html

Another non-videoscreen product, Data East Destiny, does have a head start with its own driver. Artwork and printer support needed later.

Double Dragon is already done:

There's already a bezel for New Rally-X. It's the same as Rally-X. Have you seen something that indicates that it was different?

Blasteroids would be a good one! It would complete the Asteroids/Asteroids Deluxe/Space Duel/Blasteroids series

Nice. Applauds for the long awaited work.

Send me a message when you feel the Desert Patrol work for bezel and marquee are fully complete. I can message later, but will wait some more. This will be great knowing that reprints should be possible in order to ensure the actual Desert Patrol cabs can still be preserved for as long as possible.

Seeing how Juergen B's TTL pong emulation visually shows non-cpu games will be ultra slow (at around 7 fps on high end machines), I figure Desert Patrol emulation running at full speed framerate might be another decade or two decades away.

I am glad the artwork part (bezel and marquee) appears complete. The game uses interior artwork pieces, but that is for another time whenever interior scenery pieces can ever be found. As always before, thanks again for doing this for one of my favorite non-cpu arcade games.

So..........how does a round of working with a marquee of PSE's Game Tree grab you? *j/k*

iirc I bought a marquee in 2008. It hasn't been scanned yet.

1. A good, clean closeup photo of the Battle Zone scope.
2. A good scan of the 6-player X-Men marquee.
3. A good, high-res face-on photo of a Mega-Tech cabinet.
4. A reproduction of the 'light bar' panel for Tron, the one between the bezel and the CPO.
5. The bezel for Shadow Dancer (the red one, not the grey one).

For #1, if you're talking about the sticker under the scope, that's been done:

For #5, it's been scanned already. Needs stitching and cleaning:

Re: Battle Zone

No, not that. What I want to do is frame the game with a photo of just the scope area itself, to make it appear as though you're looking through one at the game.

Re: Shadow Dancer

Thanks! Big help.

Full CHD files of the original Laser Discs. They tend to be around 10GB when made.

I'm working on Sega Champion Boxing bit by bit. If anyone has a good font for the instruction card, send it.
