My work is having a "retreat" tomorrow...kind of a team building thing and part of the day includes hitting up the casinos, and they;re giving us all a small stipend (about $30) to gamble with.
I'm not much of a gambler, so what games should I play to have the best chances of coming out ahead?
Even doubling it to $60 would be awesome but being that I'm a gambling novice, even if I'm up $5 I'd be happy.

If you want to come out ahead, its not about what's fun or exciting, it's about odds.
Blackjack is still stacked in the house's favor, but has the better odds for the player to come out ahead.

I wouldn't even plan on breaking even. If you want to come out ahead, don't bet anything and put the $30 in your pocket and just watch the other people. However, $30 can go a long time at the slot machines.

Roulette has got to be better odds than BJ if you use most of the outside bets.

If video poker - Aces Bonus pays double for two pair ($$$ lasts longer) or Double Double Bonus and go for a 4 of a kind in aces, 2's, 3's, or 4's with an ace kicker...
if slots - I have the best luck with Williams slots especially Goldfish Mermaid Wonders... I freakin' love that game.
If video keno - depending on Game King version, I usually play two dimes per play and mark a 5 or a 6 spot (5 spot = $164, 6 spot = $332)
Here's a hot 5-spot I hit recently with 8 dimes in (max bet) for $682.80 wish I had played the #19... oh well...
Good luck!

The problem with blackjack is that you have to know how to play each hand to maximize your odds. If you're just winging it, you're probably no better off than slots or anything else.
Video poker's a little easier because you can download one of those crib sheets that tells you how to play each hand. It's pretty easy to memorize the basics, anyway. Plus you don't have the dealer or other players rolling their eyes when you fuck it up.
With only $30, you can pretty much expect to lose it all anyway. Personally, I'd find some quarter slots to throw it in. If you hit it big, great. If not, it'll be an hour's worth of entertainment, maybe more if you hit a lucky streak.

I own a Pachislo slot machine and after tinkering around with it and reading through the manuals, it's pretty clear that (with Pachislo anyway) it's all programmed whether the next spin will win or not. I'm sure American slots are the same.
Slots to me seem to be the fastest way to drain your money.

I have done it before on the 1c machines - on average, it took between 8 and 15 minutes to lose $1 betting just 1 credit (Australian machines only accept $1 coins or banknotes; NZ decided on $2 coins for some reason). Of course though, I don't ever expect to win much, the usual amount you will win on any spin will be 10 credits or less, even in free games (which may not even pay a win besides the feature trigger itself). But, when you want to waste a lot of time for next to nothing, it's not a bad way. Compared with a 'modern' arcade like a fighting game, it's all over in 2 minutes if you lose a vs. game against a friend, and even the 'arcade mode' (for example SF2, Tekken series) will only take about 10 minutes to complete if you don't lose. Of course though, if you're an arcade master and there happens to be a Pac-Man or Asteroids still around, you can be there for quite a long time.

Slots are based on percentages, so a machine set for 96% payout will pay out 96 cents for every dollar spent on average over the long run. You'll see them advertised like that sometimes, some of them as high as 99%. > Slots to me seem to be the fastest way to drain your money.
It depends how much you're starting with. Slots let you make relatively small bets, so you can stretch out your money even if you're not winning very much. I don't think I've ever seen blackjack for less than $5 a hand, and $10+ is more common at the casinos I've been to. If you're starting with $30, it's going to be a pretty short night unless you're incredibly lucky on the first few hands.

We're actually only going to be gambling for a couple of hours before we catch the bus so maybe I should change my question to the biggest bang for the buck in a few hours?
I'm fully expecting my cash to go fast. When it comes to lady luck, she's never been too kind with money around me.

I recall an area casino, this year or last, running ads claiming that they'd been voted (or polled?) as having a higher payout % than any of their competition. Not they that actually did; just that that was how patrons felt.
I laugh at radio ads often.

I believe Penn Jillette put it best when he said the entire city of Las Vegas was built on people who are bad at math.

Its easy to practice, you just need to learn a few simple rules and the odds are pretty good. I used to play a lot with friends before going out at Uni. If you want to make it really simple just keep taking cards up to about 15 then stick, you win some loose some but its suprising how often you beat the dealer.
And learn the rules properly, I lost £10 instantly on a cross channel ferry coming back from Amsterdam once. I kept hitting on low value cards until I had a five card trick until the dealer pointed out 5 card tricks were not allowed in Blackjack. I was playing the version we played at uni forgetting where I was. Mind you I was very stoned.

Big bang for the buck with no skill... well, put it all on red at the roullette table... just slightly less than 50/50 chance of doubling your money, and bragging that you did if you do.
But it you win, take your doubled cash and walk away... because invariably you'll say "Man, that was easy, I could even quadruple it!"

Surprising how often "Amsterdam" and "stoned" come up in the same sentence.

I lost my stipend pretty quick playing a mix of the video poker and slots. One of my coworkers put 1 dollar into the 1 Cent slots, did the max bet, and won $46 dollars. I think she was the biggest winner of the group. I just watched my credits dwindle, dwindle....gone.
Ah well I had fun, except when looking around the casino and you see so many VERY old people, with the saddest expressions on their faces as they play the slots. This one old man wasn't even looking at his reels, just kept hitting "max bet" and then "spin".

I wish someone would open a "Classics" Casino with nothing but machines from the 70's and 80's. Git yer hands nice and dirty in the coins, experience actual coin-in and hopper jamb-ups, the noise of the bells, the coin tray payouts, the clickity-clank of the slot machine mechanisms. None of that ticket in/ticket out crap of today.

However, that 'long run' could be well over 10 years of gameplay, and the results are truly random in the fact you could have the same result more than once before having other results. Take Queen of the Nile for example, there is one wild on every reel, 5 reels and laid out as 30x30x30x30x44 in terms of positions - theoretically, that is 35,640,000 to 1 for a 9000:1 hit*. Divide it by the amount of lines played and you're still going to be waiting years to see it!
* A standard Australian version of Queen of the Nile pays 9000 x bet per line for 5 Cleopatras in a row.
