Anybody else see that movie vaguely based on the Hobbit?
#318877 - 12/18/13 05:05 AM

Not to be a spoiler, but… like next to nothing from "part 2" comes from the book. It's like vaguely inspired by the book at best. The first "part 1" took some liberties here and there, but over all you could tell they were following the story laid out in the book… but this "part 2" is like a whole other story. The elf/dwarf love affair, the presence of Legolas at all, Gandalf's business away was previously unknown but here created, Sauron being incarnate despite not possessing his essence locked within the ring (the whole reason he needed the ring in "Lord of the Ring" and pursued Frodo to begin with) and revealed to Gandalf (making the whole surprise of his return in the Lord of the Rings trilogy now a stretch), the Orcs specifically pursuing the dwarves as opposed to being just generally about and dangerous, the entire barrel ride and battle whereas before they were just nailed and shut in the barrels until collected by men, the injuring of and subsequent leaving behind several dwarves in the village, Bard's prior knowledge of Smaug's weakness as opposed to his learning of it from the elderly talking thrush in the heat of battle, the dwarven battle against Smaug is ridiculous considering the dwarves never entered the mountain until after Smaug already had left to destroy the town… the Golden King statue!!! Ridiculous… why would all of that crafting and machinery have been fabricated and prepositioned but for the lighting of the fire to make it all work yet never utilized… they made all that yet no one bothered to light the fire to make it mold the statue until now? Just in time to battle Smaug, albeit futile. Dumb dumb dumb. And why would they think molten metal would be bad for him… his very breath is hot enough to melt metal (e.g. is hotter than molten metal) to begin with… it would be like using 98.7 degree water to try and kill a human.

I REALLY was bothered by how they portrayed Bilbo coming to possess the arcenstone. In the book, he's sent into the mountain to scout around to see if Smaug still lives, with instructions that he may keep what ever he likes… and he finds the arcenstone by chance, and chooses to keep it as part of his take. Only later, as the King is looking around, does Bilbo realize the King looks for what he found. In the movie, he is sent into the mountain specifically to find the arcenstone, and so in keeping it, that would change the very circumstance and moral character of Bilbo from fairly acquired to essentially stolen.

I went in as excited as a kid on Christmas, and came out a disappointed kid who just learned Santa isn't real. No shit?

There's no reason why the story of The Hobbit couldn't be told in a single movie, they did the entire LOTR trilogy in three. I think Peter Jackson is in a similar position to where George Lucas was when he made the Star Wars prequels: nobody dares to question him or edit his ideas. I guess the Tolkein family just turned everything over to him, you'd think they would object to major changes and new characters. New Line certainly doesn't care, as long as they get to milk the cash cow.

I refuse to see it. I wasted my thirty-or-so bucks a dozen years ago on Jackson's three Rings films. Waited until Hobbit 1 came out on dvd and spent a total of twenty minutes watching it - the first fifteen minutes of the film, and then five more fast-forwarding thru it when I realized it was even worse than the Rings trilogy.

The ten bucks I'm NOT spending on a Hobbit ticket is nothing compared to the jillions they will rake in from an undemanding public, but I think I just may frame that Hamilton and proudly hang it on my wall.

You sound like me after watching the latest Star Trek movies after they buttfucked the timeline. I'm glad I haven't read the Hobbit books. I saw the cartoons as a kid, that's it, so I've been able to enjoy the movies.

There's so much more real meat in the Hobbit & the trilogy that you're doing yourself a disservice by not reading them.

As far as the cartoons go, and Bakshi's movie, watching them thirty years later they definitely leave much to be desired, but (to me at least), the "spirit" of the books is in them, and that counts for a lot. Jackson's movies were all flash but dead as a doll's eyes.

I have a pile of work related shit I'd need to get through before picking up sci fi, but that reminds me of a thought I had the other day. I was wondering if instead of all the horseshit I've read on the internet over the past 15 years I was reading books instead, what all I would know now. Kinda unsettling.

I have about 2 years of probably-interesting science articles in science fiction magazines that are ahead of almost everything I waste my time watching or reading on these screens. None of it is of any actual use to me, though....

You better not be talking about Kevin Smith. That motherfucker ROCKS! If you think his movies are stupid... well, they're supposed to be somewhat... they're satirical comedies for Christ's sake! Yet they still make multiple valid points in the funniest possible way. Dogma... holy shit that movie is funny, and managed to get under bible thumper's skin like no other.

The only time he disappointed was with Cop Out, and he didn't write that one. It was a terrible movie. And I think his whole quitting making movies thing is lame. Other than that I love him.

Don't get me wrong, Clerks pretty much defined my senior year of high school. My friends and I watched it repeatedly, listened to the soundtrack, and quoted it endlessly. Maybe our expectations were just too high, but nothing he did afterwards ever lived up to them. None of his movies suck, per se, but most are just meh. To me, what made Clerks great was the witty, edgy dialog. Once he had a budget to work with, he seemed to get away from that, in favor of more slapstick and visual humor. I really wanted to like his later movies, but most of them just fell flat for me.

I didn't get that from his movies. Some were not as good as I hoped going in (like Chasing Amy) but Mallrats is my favorite over Clerks and I don't think Clerks 2 disappointed in the slightest bit - no matter how hard people wanted it to. Even before it came out I remember people ranting about how it would never be able to stack up, what a load of shit.

In regard to your response though I have noticed that pattern with some artists, like in music a band's first album will be amazing and then everything afterward is downhill. I think it has to do with the time they spend on the first project, churning it over and over perfecting it for years until they get their first break at which case they release a cream of the crop condensed kickassness, then everything after that is just sort of "whatever comes out next we'll put on an album". Stone Roses come to mind.

That's what you get for using the word "never". So in your book, Clerks was good. In my book, Dogma was a masterpiece but I also loved Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy. He HAS lived up to the hype. Repeatedly. And he still has 2 more chances to make another good one. Tusk, and Clerks 3.

Although... it's always very hard to pull off a part 3 and make it live up to 1 and 2, unless 2 was slightly shitty on purpose

Austin Powers. That's a rare series where each episode is better than the previous one.

You're out of your mind. You have it exactly backwards. Each sequel was half as funny as the previous one.

Not always true. Sometimes it's the second album that's the best. Usually, the first album is rough, but if it was even mildly successful, then the band has more money for proper studio time and maybe a producer that can put some polish on the album. Check out this list for some good ones...

3 is clearly the best. It has heaps of funny scenes:

  • Evil rap
  • Dutch jokes
  • Goldmember himself
  • Fook Mi and Fook Yu, and Austin's list of things to do before he dies
  • "Welcome to my submarine" line
  • Fight against Mini-Me
  • Mr Roboto and the subtitles

I could go on all day.

Austin Powers 1 is way more subtle intelligent humor aimed at adults, with just a light sprinkling of dick and fart jokes for seasoning.

Austin Powers 3 is all dick and fart jokes aimed at 12-year-old boys, with a bunch of jokes recycled from the first two movies.

Did you think "Something About Mary" was the funniest movie evar?

Hmmm, no I don't see it. It just wasn't that funny.

The recycling of jokes starts in the second movie, and is done pretty well, in a self-parodying way. You probably need to have Dutch relatives to properly appreciate the Dutch jokes. It's not a serious movie, but it makes you laugh.

> Did you think "Something About Mary" was the funniest movie evar?

No, I found that movie cringe-worthy to the point of being unwatchable. And it's not that I don't like dirty jokes or "so bad it's good" material, I thought 發電俏嬌娃 was hilarious.

Heather Graham, while nice on the eyes, is rarely a believable actor. Even for a comedy her performance was particularly fake. I'm not saying that's why I rate it the lowest, and I still like the movie, but it made me laugh less than the others, and Graham needs to do more than look pretty if she has a big role in something.

That would make every Spider-Man movie shit, rather than some of them. The Running Man would be the biggest crap-fest ever conceived, rather than being a typical Schwarzenegger film. I don't even mind that the NEW Star Trek Movies do it.
A fresh start gets a fresh start, out with the old as long they don't claim to be building on it.

Actually, I guess it still bothers me that that movie was called "Scarface," when it ignores completely the actual, real historical inspiration for the original. So there's still some threshold there, somewhere.

Beyonce’s acting in 3 is comically lame as well, but that's part of what makes it funny.
