I hope everyone who follows your advice remembers it was you who gave it to them. There's a very high probability that XP designed for point-of-sale system lacks all of the same components as in standard XP, and contains modifications in others. There's absolutely no guarantee whatsoever that any given update that gets installed won't utterly break your XP install.

This is entirely aside from the fact that point-of-sale systems always or almost always come with an actual support contract, which means that tweaking your registry to pull down these updates is ostensibly theft of services as well.

I would just rather not see any MAMEWorlders get their computers fucked up due to poorly-thought-out advice, or worse, prosecuted.

1) The advise is from zdnet. I'm just pointing to it for those who refuse to upgrade.

2) The advise from most people here (including me) is to upgrade already.

If you don't want to... see #1. Better screw up an installation than to get your data compromised out of sheer stupidity or stubbornness, no?

Ah yes, ZD-Net. Surely they have vetted their advice with Microsoft and gotten the go-ahead, and aren't just repeating some poorly-thought-out crap.

Because Microsoft are going to be absolutely falling over themselves to push security updates to machines that are behind multiple layers of company firewalls if not downright air-gapped. The fact that the point-of-sale version of XP has differences from the consumer version of XP greatly affects what issues Microsoft will feel obligated to fix.

Me, I'll just be over here laughing at you people who desperately cling to your decrepit OS like it's some sort of binkie or security blanket.

All the ATMs in my bank run XP, I've seen them reboot...some of them have a speaker for some reason and play that annoying mouse click sound while you use them.

I was going to say that anyone here who's still running XP is running it on their arcade cab. But then why would you care about keeping XP updated.

It makes no difference, they are all the same. When you pick a bank in Brazil, your research is keeping a note of which bank has the shortest line at the ATMs on a busy day.

Bank of America still uses some sort of DOS variant for their mainframe stuff. I visited that horrible bank with my mother and they pulled up a command prompt to pull some data that they refuse to fix. We proved them wrong and they still refuse to fix it.

Assholes.

I've seen that here as well. I never understood why you would design a completely custom user interface and then just use all the lame stock Windows sounds.
