Took some CPO selectees to IwoTo (IwoJima, for the uneducated) yesterday for some training. Of course my entire body is sore... I'm getting too old for this shit. And we're hiking Mt. Fuji on Tuesday. God help me.

Enjoy your hike.
I've never been to Japan, I had no idea that gravity allowed you to stand sideways there. Sweet.

It wasn't sideways when I first posted it... What the hell happened? It was not taken with my phone sideways, nor is it sideways when I save the attached pic to desktop and view it...
Even if you visited Japan, it's highly unlikely you'd ever get to see IwoTo.

I tried to post a pic from work using Chrome, on a HP computer. I resized it in Paint, but when I would attach it to a post it resized itself -in that it had this huge white area around the pic. The 'pic' was the correct size, just not the added white area.
Now, regarding any pics you've posted. I recall you posting a pic of yourself next to your wife. I think she had a *white shirt on, you were in your khaki colored (naval) uniform, and it was in a place that had a tiki-bar theme going on.... Or whatever it was. It had some bamboo... whatever in the background.
*= Or did you have the white shirt on? Then that would mean you were both wearing white shirts, with some small logo on them -probably.

iPhones will automatically recognize when a photo needs to be shown vertically and rotate them on your phone, but once the jpg leaves the phone, a PC won't autorotate it.

I think you forgot that there's people here (and I don't mean me) who might photoshop you into a picture having sex with Orclord just for the hell of it. Or are those days over?

There's something with either/both Win7 onward, and HTML5. My egg face image was problematic in that it was upside-down for some reason. Rotating and saving did not help. I had to put it in Paint and change the file type.

On my PC, when I download the pic from this thread, the pictures are oriented correctly. They are only sideways on this message board.

I'm only guessing but since I've never known the messageboard to rotate pictures and I know for sure some software does, that the picture is not a vertical picture and everything you are viewing it in is auto-rotating it for you. If you open it up in irfanview and it's vertical then I guess it is the messageboard doing it but that's incredibly unlikely.

We have more class than that.
(truth be told, if I could have found OrcAssBrush.jpg this thread would have gone a much different direction.)

jpg headers contain orientation info. I would guess the orientation is being read and and auto-rotation is being done by any software written in the last decade. This forum...probably not equipped with such niceties.

The only five pleasures in my life: Working, gaming, eating, sleeping, and preserving history through emulation. Anything that comes between me and those five things makes me miserable and I react accordingly.
Edit: Shitting sometimes, too, but nothing usually interrupts that.

Installed irfanview just to humor you, and it shows right-side up. Heck, just saving it to the desktop shows a thumbnail facing the correct way. It's definitely something in the message board. Instead of simply displaying the file as is, I think it may be trying to orientate it according to it's size/shape, as if nobody ever takes photos in portrait...

The actual image data on those photos are stored with the image sideways. There's an EXIF tag that says to rotate the image 90 degrees clockwise when displaying, which most image viewers seem to be honoring. However, it appears that the forum is just barfing the pixels directly on the screen without looking at the EXIF data.
I recall that this forum software is pretty old. Maybe it pre-dates the widespread use of EXIF.

Thanks for checking. irfanview was the only program I've used before where I never saw it auto-rotate. I guess italie and krick are correct, there is some header info that came out after our software. You can try a workaround like resizing it down in irfanview and resaving as a new file. I don't know if that will work. Hang on I'll try. Yep that worked.

Just to clarify it: * Some JPEG images (the EXIF standard) contain orientation information. Anything taken with a handheld device not prehistoric will store such information. * Most image viewers (including the Windows Image Viewer and the Explorer thumbnail generator) use that information to correctly show the picture in the right way. * No browser does auto-rotation when displaying the image in a page. There's no standard way to put a picture in HTML and "auto-rotate".
As far as message board software goes, I don't think there's any which does auto-rotation. It would imply reading on the server side the EXIF information, generating a rotated file and sending it instead of the original. So if the server doesn't rotate it for you, and the browser doesn't do it either...
I know many sites do it, like Facebook, Pinterest, Flickr, etc. Probably they rotate the picture when storing it and never bother about it ever again.
