I really suck at soldering
#332655 - 10/02/14 11:46 AM Attachment: 3DS_NAND_Restore_04.jpg 91 KB (0 downloads)

Was going to try making one of these for the fun of it, and it was just too frustrating. First attempt: plastic melted to the contacts (and my iron tip)in no time flat.

Second: Tried pulling everything out and take the plastic out of the picture. The damn pins are thin, springy, and won't stay still.

I give up. You need 3 or 4 hands to do this crap.

Tried glueing the wires to the plastic with the extremity in the correct position before soldering?

Also, tin the wires extremities before glueing.

You can get those for like 10 at your local electronic-parts store...
they are pretty handy and a good investment, can save you a lot of frustration... I could not for the love of all that's holy find mine though... should be around my soldering tabel somewhere, but can't find it :S

I suppose you could do that. Also, I would've taped down the card.

That's basic soldering technique.

> I suppose you could do that. Also, I would've taped down the card.

The first one I tried melted the plastic fater than I could get the wires soldered (and I was using a cheap 25w iron). Taping the card wouldn't fix that problem, and taping the contacts down when removed would just give me melted tape all over the contacts.

I'm going to wait for the helping hands thing to come in, along with my soldering station. Then, I'm going to cut the super-thin part of the contacts with the springy loop thing off(the adpter I'm using isn't made quite the same as the pic I posted), before trying again.

EDIT: and... I just watched a few youtube videos about flux. I haven't been using it the way I should.

What about using one of those soldering irons that use the 2 graphite ceramic tips? *What's that called?... *

Have no clue what you're talking about. I'll google it later though. I'm on my way to Tokyo for the night

I am impatient though. I felt like a dumbass after watching vids about flux so I came home and I got the job done fairly easily. Sunday, I'll probably do the 3DS side (XL, so way easier than the adapter thing) and make a nand dump.

I've seen worse. It's just that your process was flawed. You need to tightly twist and tin the wires with solder, tin the contacts and then while holding the tinned wire to the tinned contact, apply heat with the iron to 'sweat' the connection together. Soldering is just one of those things that gets better with practice, like sex. I'm not going to make the analogy about riding a bike because once during what I thought was a successful date, I kept pedaling with my feet and still fell off. She no longer returns my calls.

Scam

The pic wasn't my work, just an example of what I was trying to do. I'm familiar with tinning, my biggest problem was lack of flux.

It was always explained to me that flux "helps the solder flow". Didn't know until now that the flux actually corrodes the top layer of oxidation off of the metal when it heats up, allowing for a pure(ish) bond (and the solder certainly does seem to flow onto a wire when this happens, but the reason WHY was what I really needed to get it through my thick skull).

The issue is with mortal females..... new [Re: Tomu Breidah]
#332906 - 10/07/14 08:51 PM

It's still rather amazing that the most sensually, sexually, and in ways emotionally, advanced female I've met was nineteen when I was twenty-one. But even she was only half-divine. And since then, I've been partaking of whatever stock might be available, but that I find at least somewhat desirable. I don't fret, though. I could be mortal, too. And that would suck.
