Your "April Fools Day" emulated WIP image game list
#352307 - 04/01/16 07:24 PM

Time for a different approach with this year's April Fools day, but before doing that
here is an old post to refresh some users about the 2002 April Fools event that Gridle had pulled on some users back in 2002 when Gridle was doing a fake 2002 MAME WIP post. Imo it was the best ever April Fools stunt that Gridle had pulled. The 2001 April Fools MAME WIP post was clever, but it was an obvious April Fools WIP to all users. The 2002 version was brilliant for its time because it angered many of the Sega games fans that day. LOL

This excerpt is for users that weren't around or following emulation from many years earlier when ztnet was one of the main host providers for emulation sites like RG, MAME.net, MAMEWorld etc.

..for any of the long time emulation followers that remember the 2002 April Fools joke that Gridle had pulled with Model 2 wip update on old MAME.net web site.

For those that had never visited old MAME.net web site, the site maintainer "Santeri S. / Gridle" would type up MAME wip moments so users could see what was completed over a few days and maybe what to expect in a future MAME release. For April Fools day in 2001 Gridle did a light-hearted wip update that made fun of MAMEdevs, but it was clever and well done without getting users upset.

For April Fools day MAME wip update in 2002, Gridle had posted a Model 2 emulation update that showed 'doctored' images of Model 2 games running in MAME. The chat forums were filled with lots of over-excited fans waiting to try Model 2 emulation in a future release of MAME. When it was discovered later in the day that it was an April Fools prank by Gridle, there were several upset "kidz" that were dismayed that it was a joke by Gridle. A few posted swearing so the forum had to be cleaned up with a few posts having to be deleted.

Model 2 games were not emulated until another few more years had passed...maybe around 2004 or 2005 iirc.

I thought it was a clever April Fools stunt that Gridle pulled in 2002, but not a surprise that some users were to react like that regarding the 2002 April Fools prank of Model 2 being emulated because in 2001 when CPS-2 was first emulated by using XOR files created by Razoola there was huge excitment because an emulator "finalburn" was running some of the CPS-2 games. When the author (Dave) decided to stop doing any more supporting of CPS-2 games, the "kidz" just went nuts with the usual "internet-type" threats on Dave and any others involved with emulator "finalburn" back around spring 2001.

Glad that is now ancient history and most of the "spastic troublemaker kidz" back then have long left and moved on.

After reading the excerpt, suppose you were running an emulation site like Gridle was running old MAME.net and able to post image snaps on the MAME WIP page, and let's say the year was 2003 or 2004 instead of 2016 when the days used to be source code would be handled by one person and there would be no interim releases nor git for users to keep tabs on of hourly/daily changes.

What April Fools MAME WIP image snaps snaps would you be posting to fool folks visiting the site for the day if it were 2003 or 2004?

My images:

Marble Madness 2 (Bouncer would be too obvious)
Death Race (for the 1970s fans that remember the game)
Any Sega Model 3 game
Any Taito Type X game
Dragons Lair or Mad Dog Mcree
supposed arcade version of Parasol Stars
some console game
and one handheld game....such as Mattel Electronics Football
