No, they are not.

Guess it's time to reboot again. $#@! NVidia.

And I don't even have anything humorous to put here.

Here's how to avoid all these issues with NVIDIA drivers:

  1. Buy a Quadro or two
  2. Only download/install the ODE drivers from NVIDIA site

Seriously, GeForce cards, "GeForce experience" and the rest of it is shit. I have none of these problems by just using their pro stuff.

Um, no. Not unless I'm spending as much on one card as I spent on this whole PC, and even then, I won't be getting drivers optimized for games. The GTX drivers are updated for nearly every AAA title. The Quadros are not, which is why there are no driver update issues.

Quadros work fine with games, and the drivers get regular updates. They also actually work and don't have all the bullshit bundled with them. (Besides, if you need a driver update for each and every game, there's something very wrong with the abstraction model.)

They work. They aren't as good as a GeForce that costs half as much. I'm not spending $700-$4000 on graphics cards.

They are usually the same speed binned silicon with a slightly different BIOS on the card. The driver stack is usually tuned for graphical workflows not games. Sometimes the RAM will be clocked a bit different and a few extra features turned on/off, depending. On average the quadro will be slower on games (for the same gen card). The driver stack is not tuned for that. However, for gaming they tend to turn off the higher precision compute. Part of how the game path runs faster. Flip it around and use it for a CUDA sort of thing and the quadro will probably beat the game version of the card for what you are doing. Its just market segmentation. This is a fairly old review that shows it. https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Can-you-game-on-an-NVIDIA-Quadro-GPU-604/

You are not paying that sort of money for a decent video card. You are paying for 'this API is borked in the 4th decimal position, fix it yesterday' and 'do not install extra things on this corporate server, we control everything'. Can you run games on them? Absolutely. They just are not configured for that use case.

Have not tried it lately but I think the 'geforce experience' can be uninstalled separately and it leaves the drivers behind? You do not get auto updates anymore and on the next reinstall I think it will put it back. Bit of a pain, but there you go... There are also a few services they like to install as well that do not really do anything useful.

Vas feels it is worth his time to pay to not have to mess with that sort of thing. I personally just leave it be. As my use case is probably different than his. Sounds like yours is cost. So you are going to be playing with the bundleware nvidia likes to put in.

The money is still the money, regardless of what the cause of the higher cost is.

If I'm replacing a working part, there needs to be a really good reason. Right now it can't happen at any price, and when it can, that price needs to not be higher than a new system, while the part needs to give me a lot more power.
