newbie question on F5 / Game Search / Audit and network drive

I am using MAMEUI64 0.180 and I have all the ROMs and CHDs on a network drive. Is there a workaround to build its database without doing Game Search? It takes more than a DAY to scan through everything. Can I use DAT files somehow instead?

that isn't desirable, plus I don't know that it would make a difference.
what about the DAT route? Where does MAMEUI keep its database of what games are available and where they are located? Couldn't I just edit that? What does Game Search really do?
