Anybody else think MameUI64 is still the best ?
#363502 - 02/13/17 10:35 PM

I've recently retested using offcial Mame and also IV/Play Qmc2 and also emuloader. I didn't like any of them, either their too complicated or and has a bunch of of features that are not really necessary to the average user who just wants to play Arcade games, it's nuts. I've been using Mame32 since about 2002. If I'd have to pick a runner up it would probably have to be offcial Mame, but I've issues with it, that I don't understand why certain things work as they do. I wished John would have just stuck with MameUI.

Is it true years back Mame32/MameUI was the most popular Mame variant by far ?

Does anybody know how many people still use MameUI is the number large enough that it will keep getting updated for many many years to come ?

I'm not expecting new features in future updates, so how difficult is it just to keep it going ?

How many people still work on it I'm hoping it's not just one person.

Thanks

It's my favorite too. Unfortunately, it pretty much is only Robbbert maintaining it now.

For my point of view is the best. I won’t rest value to other frontends but MAMEUI aka MAME32 is user friendly and on July of this year it’s 20 years old too, like MAME. If my memory don’t fault, it was released with MAME 0.31 and I remember that you could play city connection, pacman and moon patron with this version. I am using MAMEUI since then. It’s a pity that some people want to bury it, inside my heart MAME32 is the official’s MAME UI , it’s 20 years of history and use.

There was definitely a version .30 of MAME32.

I think that kinda also shows why it's a problem tho.

It's been an *unofficial* UI for 20 years, and in that time the code hasn't really changed that much, and ask any dev, standards were much lower back then.

MAME has gone through so many rewrites since then that there's barely a line of code left since then, and each time MAMEUI has been kludged to work again rather than receiving the same level of care to improve it.

That takes it's toll.

If it was the most popular then why has it fell to the way side then ? Why wasn't it not improve and evolved also ?

because none of the devs with any talent actually used it because it is/was a major inconvenience that gets in way of development, in addition, it is Windows specific and an awful lot of devs aren't on Windows.

most devs will recommend something that actually *works* for the full featureset of MAME like QMC2 and if any real work was done for MAMEUI it would end up turning into something like that anyway, as it stands somebody else has already done the work for us by creating QMC2.

the reason MAME has always moved forward, and is still going is because it's built more around the needs of the developers - rapid development, rapid driver prototyping, submit quick+early and improve methodologies, easy to add new features etc. not the 'popularity' of any given system or feature. MAMEUI really does nothing but slow development down so it's unsurprising the main devs have no interest in maintaining it.

Yes, still the best I've used. And the one I gave to various friends to get them into MAME, especially those who aren't so hot at software skills.

I'd try some of the others but many alternative interfaces don't have a gallery of images of their UI on theior download/home page, and I rarely care to install, configure and try something out unless I have pretty pictures of how it will look/work first.
