No, it's like, the thief seen that Smit was so bad off (because people that usually steal identities go for people with great looking credit histories) he felt sorry for him.
It reminds me of a joke I've made about myself in the past...
I had my house broke into. When the thieves seen how much of a mess it was, they figured someone else already broke into it and ransacked the place before they did, so then they left.
