the inks you get with the printer are usually only half full (if that) in these cases.

just a horrible industry, best avoided altogether if possible.

I just opened it up and the carts look exactly the same and are heavy. I don't think that is the case. It says they will do around 160 pages.

Not possible for me.

I've heard people say that before, that it's cheaper to buy a new printer than to buy ink.

Here's a link to printers with ink tanks instead of cartridges, which you just pour more ink into. Maybe still cheaper to buy disposable printers, but worth looking into...

refillable ink tank printers

It would just change the problems I think. For example at that price point it's an investment I'd have to justify over years and I have no reason to believe it's built better. My last HP printer shitted out on me in about a year of heavy art project use. Paid way more for the shit ink than the printer, though I think I still paid like $100 for it. Never paying that much again. And off brand ink brings even more problems.

I think I'll just stack them and take them to a place that accepts old tech then I don't even have to feel bad about trashing them :-P

This is exactly the printer I have.

The paper tray is a bit odd. The loading tray has an arm that rotates out with an end that folds out from that. For holding longer paper? Don't bet on it. The... out tray (?) has a piece that slides out to extend it, but even with that pulled all the way out, 8.5x11 sheets will fall off it onto the floor if the loading tray arm isn't extended.

I don't much like the included software, but you'll get the same with any Canon printer, I guess. It does duplex printing, though I have to remember to turn that on or off each time, and fight with multiple printer settings dialogs.

Yep I've already tested it. The loading is wack and the scanner is a complete waste as I already have a bigger flatbed. I definitely like Canon over HP though. At least there's that.

30 bucks shipped with black and color ink carts that cost more than the printer. When they run out I'm going to take a hammer to it.

My wife uses some HP Office Jet setup that takes 5 different cartridges.

She gets them refilled at Costco for 7 bucks a pop. She can print shitloads before it's time to refill them again.

Not bad but last I checked 7x5=35 is 5 more dollars than I'd pay for that unit and ink carts shipped to my door while sitting on my ass having it shipped for free and not paying for a Costco membership and driving out to the boonies for groceries.

A friend talked me into a Costco membership once. I went there. Once.

I ended up getting a Brother laser printer / scanner. I thought it would be a huge inconvenience not being able to print color, but it's been OK. When we need color, we go to library or Office Max. Toner lasts a LONG time. New toner is cheap! Never going back to ink again.

Yeah, I spent a grand on a Samsung colour laser, never regretted it.

If I ever do SMT work to preserve the firmware of a throwaway printer please see that I'm locked up in a mental institution

And make sure they still have the electroshock therapy machines

Nah- they've been doing this for years. And we've been letting them.

I would personally get a laser printer if I printed a lot. The problem is I only need to print once or twice a year. So justifying the cost of one is a bit on the miss side for me. I gave up on ink jet years ago. In the mid 90s they were pretty awesome and cheap. Now they are just cheap at first.

Once you get a laser printer though the things are usually tanks and last forever. The carts are more pricy but you get like several thousand sheets out of them before you refill. Figure you get 100 sheets out of a inkjet and the heads do not clog. You can get 10k out of a laser cart on some models.

Yeah that's basically it.

Search online stores for printers, sort by least expensive and sledgehammer it when it runs out of ink the first time, then the manufacturer loses money and we can start getting revenge for all the money they scammed us on in the past.

Don't sledgehammer it, find an e-waste recycling facility (if there is one in your area) and drop it off for recycling. Much better than sending it to landfill (I do volunteer work at an e-waste recycling facility and all the parts from the printers and other electronics that get disassembled at this facility are properly reused or recycled)

So either pay a fee or wait six months for the next time they're accepting limited e-waste free. Yeah, there's one I know of in the state, though there are probably others.
