I blame Lev.

Well, that's not just a veterans only thing, but it was in use since before I stumbled upon emulation back in 1999...

Rename to ssf2 and run in FinalBurn! OK, so I only registered here in 2005, but I was at Retrogames since 1998 and I'm _still_ the Console Emulation Board mod (Hah!).

Good ol' NeoRage and NeoRageX... NESticle, Genecyst, and Callus... ZSNES when it had that brown gradient background and little blue block menu. Those were the days.

Retrocade, the M72 emulator, the System16 emulator! I guess Raine is still around, but I haven't been following it since back in those days.

And then having to actually hunt for roms because there were no GoodTools, No-Intro, Redump, etc. and the only rom manager I can remember was MAME32's audit. Rom sites that sprung up on Geocities and Tripod and that other prolific free webspace site that started with an i. Downloading on your blazing fast 56k modem overnight so you didn't tie up your phone line during the day. Great times.

I got a lot of my roms from irc. Those were fun times.

I would, but I don't remember them well enough to give them names. Also, I'm pretty sure they predate 2002. ROMs all over the place. A forum before anyone knew that was a name they would want to pronounce.

Yep. Came with my first PC in '02. And most people in the states were still using them. It took two or three years before 'broadband' really rolled out such that 256k was only $30/mo.

Discovering through a mutual friend who worked there that mame.dk was run by some dudes who worked for my ISP.

Ducking over to Retrogames to read up on all the weirdness on the CA board, Razoola-related drama, and EMU-LMAO. It was a guilty pleasure.

I was reg'ed on the mame.net boards. Not here though. Which probably means I'm not included in "teh clewb".

Ah yes. I remember the first topic I made back at the old boards. I asked a question about cheats, then got flamed by.... ShinAkuma2002? Or was that the guy that was using a too-big sig-pic at the Tenchu forums?

Oh well. My memory is fuzzy. There. Old-timer confirmed.

Oh, and Pi.

"MAME.DK is down again"

"CPS2SHOCK has new XORs available!"

I guess It's enough.

everybody being astounded, but at the same time bemused as to why somebody would make a site full of emulator screenshots each about 3 seconds apart

http://screenmania.retrogames.com/index2.html

ok, end of 2001, but still...

sure there was some proto-meme associated with this at the time too, Opi-F12 or something.

not sure he's been heard from since either.

Classicgaming

sys2064

EdgeEmu

Emuchina

AceRoms

I think I used Romcenter back then for auditing. Hunting for ROMS was a PITA, but an awesome payoff once you struck gold. Ace Roms was put on Earth to anger people. Constantly resetting connections and killing downloads. Learned about DL managers real quick!

Got into this through archaic ruins around 97. I had my own CRC batch file method to sync it all together. Which got thrown away once mame.dk showed up and the auto tools and then came back for a bit then throw away when clrmamepro showed up. Just blew away my 'extras' folder a few weeks ago as I didnt really need it anymore.

Dont forget Zophar's Domain. Think it is still active?

Dont remember if I had bothered to register on mame.net at all. The drama was amusing to watch at a distance

I remember back when rom downloads got shut down at mame.net. Whoever was running the site plastered "fuck you IDSA " or something similar all over the top of the site. Pretty damn funny.

Maybe someone here remembers it exactly.

Zophar's site is very much alive.
