I think capturing him alive would have been a thousand times worse. Al-Qaeda would have taken hostages by the hundreds, blown shit up left and right, and basically pulled out all the stops to try and force his release.
Where he's dead, there's less incentive to come after us. Maybe they'll try some revenge attacks right away, maybe not. Sure, he'll be a martyr and it will galvanize some people who were already anti-US, but I still think it's a big net loss for his followers.
