I think all the uprisings in the Islamic countries in the world, by those who want to have a democratic government and the freedoms that the Western World has, have damaged the resolve of the Al Qaeda followers more than anything else. The entire organization's strength is based on the people who think that having freedom of life and religion is a horrible thing, and those people are becoming fewer and fewer in the Middle East. So suddenly there are a lot more people whom Al Qaeda wants to hate the US who just simply don't give a shit about them and want their own freedom.
As for all the conspiracy theories, that's just human natures. Humans and society don't want to believe that something as simple as a terrorist group attacking the US is possible. So the conspiracies exist. When evidence is there proving otherwise, the evidence is disregarded. When evidence doesn't exist proving them wrong, they take that as evidence that they are right. By nature, those who believe conspiracy theories use the philosophy of guilty until proven innocent as opposed to the opposite. Granted, not every conspiracy theory is bogus, but the majority of them are. Nobody wants to believe something is as simple as it really is.
