Yup, I needed one. Not sure if there were more version changes in the design, but my hotrod requires a keyboard to be hooked up to it and I'm pretty sure it uses the chip from the keyboard (like if your keyboard was old and couldn't handle more than 3 button presses at once, you were SOL on some fighting games)
EDIT: For the record... I want to use a USB cable and ONLY a USB cable, then swiftly put it away when I'm done. I don't want to hook up a keyboard in-between that I must either lug around with the hotrod or reconnect to the computer every time. That's why I want the conversion kit. Frankly, I was quite pissed when the X-arcade came out just weeks after I caughed up the dough for a hotrod.
Just broke my personal record for number of consecutive days without dying!
