Computer HDD/SSD Question - hardcore geekiness required
01/24/12 06:54 AM

I'm about to install a new 256GB SSD into my existing i5 Win7 x64 system, and have some really oddball techie questions. Hoping that maybe some of you guys may be able to help.

Teh Background: My current system is less than a year old (homebuilt), and I'm currently using a 1TB HDD with a 64GB SSD as a cache drive (using IRST driver). I haven't seen really great HDD speed gains using the IRST caching scheme, and have decided to take the plunge and install a larger (256GB) capacity SSD as my primary disk instead.

My main question is, what would you do? Fresh Win 7 install, or clone install (with all of the hurdles, jumps, and potential pitfalls associated with a large HDD to small SSD migration)?

The way I read it, a fresh install is the way to go, but potentially with days/weeks to go to get everything fully updated and reinstalled to get back to where I am now in terms of usability and software install base. I've got a fairly complicated system running well at the moment, but one that requires an immense amount of baseline configuration (Eyefinity 3x1 with numerous profiled HID controller drivers, large software installed base, etc).

The competing idea of reconfiguring to shrink my existing HDD/OS partition for cloning to the SSD is very seductive in that it'll potentially save me those days/weeks of configuration (reducing it perhaps to days at best), but with the caveat that total loss of the installed OS and days and weeks of configuration are still a very real possibility nonetheless.

I've been reading up on the subject, and though there are many guides and utilities catering to the basic large-HDD-to-small-SSD transition, it seems that actual user results are all over the map, from total success on the one hand, to total failure on the other.

So, I guess I pose the question: What would you 'binners do? Anybody been down this path?
