GIMP 2.6 was nice but not for everyone, I guess. 2.8, which is already rather old, is very good IMHO. Look for GMIC, and "GIMP extensions", and you'll have a very powerful graphics package.
The only 'but' I have for now is the different function exports for plugins they have between 32 and 64 bit versions, so some plugins don't load and show an error at launch time, I just delete them from the plugins folder.
I've been using GIMP for many years and really I don't like Photoshop at all compared to GIMP.
