Was kind of bummed out when the Rift S was released shortly after I finally got a Rift. Saw one in a used shop recently and started looking into it again. Then looked closer at the Quest 2. Damn thing has better resolution than the Rift S, essentially the same controllers (if not ever so slightly improved), and it has its own library of games. No need for a PC. BUT, buy a compatible USB cable (must be super-speed+PD), and it has the entire library of Rift games as well, because you can tether it to your PC if you want to!
Only down side, for tinfoil hat nitwits, is that it requires a Facebook account.
I looked really hard at the HP offering... best visuals there are, for under the price of a Kidney, but they run into tracking issues, no finger tracking, and it costs basically as much as the index to get running with the Index Knuckle controllers. Speaking of finger tracking, did I mention that the Quest 2 can do hand tracking? So I guess there are some things you can play without even using controllers?
After seriously thinking about the minor resolution and internal tracking upgrades in the Rift S, The Quest 2 is a no-brainer. Ordering one right now
