Indeed, common sense and a good adblocker / script blocker, where you only whitelist what you trust.
Anti-virus software became worse than the thing it was meant to be curing a good decade ago.
Malicious scripts are, for your average user, the most common attack vector, and even with those most paid Anti-virus software is only ever playing catch-up.
