Always wondering when a "good" time will be to build a new PC
01/01/23 06:37 AM

Last upgrade: i7 4790 (not even a k, as I thought. Damn thing is @3.6GHz instead of 4) (not counting video cards).

Next cpu after that required a different socket, so I've been stuck.

Was waiting for the latest AMD to get released, because it too is a new socket. Now that it's out... it's a bit underwhelming.

But... the latest i9 is again, the last to use the current socket. I'd be stuck again, if I built one.

But I was shocked at the NEX a few days ago. They have pretty much never been known to sell components... yet... I see a bunch of young sailors gawking at something on the shelf and I walk over to see a stack of 4080 and 4090 founders editions sitting on the shelf!

At retail (no markup). And with the benefit of no taxes.

Naturally, I could not pass it up!

But... now that I've jumped off the AMD video card ship (yet again), I find that it only performs marginally better than my 6900xt. Because my MB, CPU, and RAM are all bottlenecks! Hell, not only am I stuck on PCIe 3, but it's reduced to 8 lanes, because I had to use another slot for a usb 3 addon with usb C, for VR. So... bandwidth equivalent of a PCIe 4, with 4 lanes.

With the wireless link option on the Quest 2, I wonder if I should just remove the addon card to give the full 16 lanes back to the video card... (and be without USB c ports on my desktop).

OR just buy a cheaper Ryzen (instead of a 7950) and upgrade again sooner with the same motherboard).

Just broke my personal record for number of consecutive days without dying!
