As far as actually needing 96k, I agree. My one concern is that USB devices that can't do 96k are usually USB 1.1 (and that appears to be the case with the Saffire).
Depending on your needs and expectations, it may be fine. In my experience, you may not get great performance if you need to monitor audio at really low latencies, e.g. monitoring a live guitar running through an amp simulator.
