The VS-840 has a hi-Z input for guitar, so I could use it as a DI. I'd like to use its onboard amp/cab sims, but it was early days for Roland, and the sims aren't great, particularly for a non-vintage-y high gain tone.
Another aspect to this is room. I have arcade stuff along the wall of my living room. Going the above-like route, I'd have to confiscate a space for a recording rig, whereas a USB unit would fit right on my main desktop.
Consider it high comedy....sincere tragedy....whatever...don't take it personally.
