Well they weren't his guns - they belonged to his mother. Background check wouldn't have helped. The thing is, if you have that lots of guns in the community, it's easier for crazies to get hold of some of them. It's also easier for someone having a bad day to snap and shoot someone rather than just snap and punch them.
